Topic To Be Discussed MILLING CUTTERS TYPES OF MILLING CUTTERS

A milling cutter is a cutting tool that removes material from a workpiece. It is an essential component of a milling machine. Milling cutters are used in CNC milling machines and machining centers. Milling cutters have at least one, but usually several, cutting edges. They rotate at 100 RPM and are wider than the workpiece. The cutter removes material by moving within the machine or directly from the cutter's shape. MILLING CUTTERS

1.PLAIN MILLING CUTTER A plain milling cutter is a cutting tool with straight or helical teeth that are cut on the periphery of a disc or cylindrical surface. The teeth cut flat surfaces parallel to the cutter axis. Plain milling cutters are also known as slab or surface milling cutters. The Plain Milling Cutter is generally used for milling a flat surface parallel to the cutter axis.

2.SIDE MILLING CUTTER A side milling cutter is a cylindrical tool with cutting teeth on its circumference and on both sides. It is used to remove material from the side of a workpiece. Side milling cutters are versatile tools that can be used for many machining operations, including: Slotting Contouring Angular surface machining

3.END MILLING CUTTER An end mill is a type of milling cutter, a cutting tool used in industrial milling applications. It is distinguished from the drill bit in its application, geometry, and manufacture. While a drill bit can only cut in the axial direction, most milling bits can cut in the radial direction. Not all mills can cut axially; those designed to cut axially are known as end mil

4.METAL SLITTING MILLING CUTTER A metal slitting saw is a thin, circular cutting tool used to make narrow cuts or slots in metal workpieces. They are designed to cut into both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Slitting saws have a high number of teeth per inch, which allows for precise and clean cuts. They can cut thin slot type features on parts more efficiently than any other machining tool. Slitting saws are made from the highest quality steel. They are used for cutting applications in various industries, such as paper, automobile, steel, and fabrication

5.ANGLE MILLING CUTTER Angle milling cutters are cutting tools that allow machinists to machine angles and features like notches and serrations. The cutting face of an angle milling cutter is angled with respect to the axis of rotation. There are many types of angle cutters, including single-angle cutters and double-angle cutters. Angle milling cutters are used for angular surfaces, such as chamfers, serrations, and grooves. A typical example of angular milling is milling dovetails.

6.FORMED MILLING CUTTER Formed milling cutters are used in CNC milling operations to produce irregular contours. The cutters are shaped to the contour to be cut. The contours can be concave, convex, or any other shape. The cutters are made of HSS material. Common types of formed milling cutters include: Convex, Concave, Corner rounding. When cutting harder materials like stainless steel, it may be more suitable to use a 3 or 4 flute tool for increased strength. The higher the number of flutes, the shallower each flute will be, thus creating a stronger core.

Slot milling cutters are a type of end mill used to create slots, keyways, or pockets in a workpiece. The cutting tool rotates in and out of a slot to remove material from the workpiece. The slot can be any shape or size. Slot cutters are made of solid carbide and can have one or multiple edges. They are the most commonly used type of end mill. A T-slot milling cutter, also known as a Woodruff cutter, is a specialized type of milling tool. It is used to create T-shaped slots or keyways in a workpiece. The cutter has a plain or side milling cutter mounted to the end of a narrow shank. 7.SLOT MILLING CUTTER

8.THREAD MILLING CUTTER Thread milling cutters are tools used to cut threads by milling. They are used on numerically controlled machining centers (NC) and are often used in small machines to create large-size threads. Thread milling cutters use a high-speed rotating tool to remove material from the surface of a workpiece. This creates threads with the circular spiral motion of the tool.

9. FLY MILLING CUTTER A fly cutter is a single-point cutting tool used on a milling machine to machine large, flat surfaces. The tool is mounted in a special holder and sweeps in a circle over a fixed workpiece. The tool can be adjusted to cut up to a 2.00" (51 mm) diameter. Fly cutters can be used in machining centers and manual mills without the use of additional arbors. They can be used to remove large amounts of metal and level it. They can be re-sharpened by straightforward grinding
