Determining the Dependent and Independent Variables Presented by: MA. LOIEL SALOME M. NABELON Secondary School Teacher I Mathematics 8 – Quarter II

Basketball OBJECTIVES OBJECTIVES Determine the independent and dependent variables. Appreciate the importance of dependent and independent variables in daily living.

Basketball OBJECTIVES Who among you lives with your parents? Can you live without your parents? Are you a dependent or an independent individual?

Basketball OBJECTIVES

Activity 1: Let’s Connect! Direction: Match column A which represents a situation to column B which represents the result COLUMN A 1. We received 7 inches of rain in 4 hours. 2. I never brush my teeth. 3. Smoking cigarettes. 4. I push down on the stapler. 5. He broke his arm. COLUMN B a. The doctor put it in a cast. b. The papers are stapled together. c. The underpass was flooded. d. Lung cancer. e. I have 5 cavities. c e d b a

Group Activity: ANSWER MO, SHOW MO! Directions: Complete the given statements by writing the appropriate words on the box. Write your answer on the show-me-board. When the time is up, you will raise your answer to check whether your answer is correct or not. temperature speed time dimension kilogram

Group Activity: ANSWER MO, SHOW MO! temperature speed time dimension kilogram The amount paid for sugar will depend on the number of ____________ bought. The coldness of a room is dependent on its ____________. The number of letters typed is dependent on the ____________ used for encoding. The volume of a figure is dependent on its ____________. The winner in a marathon depends on his/her ____________. kilogram temperature time dimension speed

When the time is up, you will raise your answer to check whether your answer is correct or not. temperature speed time dimension kilogram The more __________ people spend using social media, the less they read books. time

Basketball OBJECTIVES What is the difference between independent and dependent variables? Independent variable is a variable that will change by taking on different values. It changes independently. In a relation, independent variable controls the dependent variable. It is generally represented by the 𝑥 −variable or what is referred to as the 𝑥 −value.

Basketball OBJECTIVES What is the difference between independent and dependent variables? Dependent variable is a variable that is affected by the independent variable, and it changes in response to the independent variable. In a relation, dependent variable depends on the independent variable. It is generally represented by the 𝑦 −variable or what is referred to as the 𝑦 −value.

Basketball OBJECTIVES How do we know which variable is independent and which variable is dependent? INDEPENDENT VARIABLE DEPENDENT VARIABLE It belongs on the x-axis (horizontal line) Identifies the input values for a given function A variable that represents a quantity that is being manipulated in an experiment. It belongs on the y-axis (vertical line) Identifies the outputs of the function A variable that represents a quantity whose value depends on how the independent variable is manipulated.

Basketball OBJECTIVES How do we know which variable is independent and which variable is dependent? INDEPENDENT VARIABLE DEPENDENT VARIABLE Changed in a scientific experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable. A variable that stands alone and does not respond to other variables. Cause Changes in response to the independent variable. A variable whose value depends on that of another. Effect

Remembering Variables With DRY MIX The DRY MIX acronym can help keep the variables straight: D is the dependent variable R is the responding variable Y is the axis on which the dependent or responding variable is graphed (the vertical axis) M is the manipulated variable or the one that is changed in an experiment I is the independent variable X is the axis on which the independent or manipulated variable is graphed (the horizontal axis)
