DIARRHOEAL DISEASE CONTROL PROGRAMME BY- NIKHIL GUPTA 1616021

Why do we need to control diarrheal diseases? Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old. It is both preventable and treatable. Each year diarrhoea kills around 5,25,000 children under five. A significant proportion of diarrhoeal disease can be prevented through safe drinking-water and adequate sanitation and hygiene. Globally, there are nearly 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhoeal disease every year. Diarrhoea is a leading cause of malnutrition in children under five years old.

DIARRHOEAL DISEASE CONTROL PROGRAMME - Started by WHO in the year 1978 Objective was to reduce the mortality and morbidity due to diarrheal diseases.

After the 1985-86 oral rehydration therapy programme , the DDCP has shifted its focus on strengthening case management of diarrhea under 5 years of age. Research on the causes, prevention and treatment of diarrheal diseases is also being incorporated in this programme .
