WAYS OF COMMUNICATION Walsh, M. (2006) The ‘Textual Shift’; Examining the reading process with print, visual, and multimodal texts. The Australian Journal of Language and literacy,29(1) , 24-36. Retrieved July 2, 2011, from: http://search.informit.com.au\documentSummary;dn=063500573261111;res=IELHSS GRADE 9

Differences between print material and reading online PRINT-BASED TEXTS Print based texts involve different levels, critiquing and analysing. Words rely on the logic of speech involving time and sequence. ONLINE READING The reader needs to simultaneously process the message in the words, picture, images and graphics. The logic of the image involves the presentation of space simultaneity

Six ways of communication(modes) Verbal linguistic Visual Audio Gestural\ Kinestic Spatial Tactile

THE VERBAL LINGUISTIC MODE The verbal linguistic mode uses words and language: vocabulary ,generic structure and grammar of oral or written language Which means this mode or form of communication requires a person to communicate using words and speak out loud the message that their trying to convey to another person

Visual mode Visual mode is using images, signs, symbols and graphic organizers such as tables, diagrams, charts ,mind maps, colour, vectors, and viewpoint in still and moving images Which then means that the visual mode is when you use pictures and other things that people can view then see them as a type of communication

Audio mode Audio mode: using speech, sound, music, volume, pitch, rhythm sound effects The audio mode or audio communication is conveying a message through sound which means you use speakers music and other sound devices to put across a particular communication.

Gestural mode Gestural mode is using movement, speed and stillness in facial expression ,gestures and body language. Gestural communication is using body language to convey a message even from moving your hand to even your body as you put across a particular message. Gestural communication is characterised by movement of the body and the signs u show rather than facial expression which remains still.

Spatial mode Spatial mode is using proximity, direction, position, layout, and organisation of objects in space. Spatial is using position and direction to communicate a particular message this is done through the position of certain objects in space like satellites it also works by tracing the position of people and objects.

Tactile mode Tactile mode is using touch or feeling e.g. texts, artworks, that contain different kinds of materials and textures. Meaning that the tactile mode uses the senses like touch and different types of feelings to convey a particular message or communication across. It uses different types of texts and even artworks to put across communication.

How to teach the different modes to learners without digital devices Learners that don’t have digital devices in at their schools or in their possession would be hard to teach about the different modes of communication but a solution is that for me to make copies of each mode and providing the with print outs explaining the modes. Then also elaborate on the modes during my lesson by carrying an example or an illustration of that mode during my lesson. For example for the verbal linguistic I would ask the learners to read a dialogue thus illustrating the oral part of the verbal mode and bring a book to illustrate the written language part.

Teaching modes cont. To illustrate the visual mode I would provide pictures for them to analyse, draw charts and diagrams on the chalkboard for them to engage in. To illustrate the audio mode I would bring a speaker and play a song or a recording just for them to know that the audio mode is based on sound. To illustrate the gestural mode I would move my hands and my body poster just for them to know that the gestural mode is based on movement and even have a still face whilst I perform these activities. To illustrate the spatial mode I would come with a campus to show direction to them and even come with a globe of the earth to show them position. To illustrate the Tactile mode I would come with a variety of material from a computer keyboard to artwork just to show them that the tactile mode is based on touch and its all about feeling.
