DIGESTIVE SYSTEM OF A COW PRESENTED BY, ANCY.A.R Natural Science Christ Nagar College Of Education
INGESTION Nutrition in ruminants is somewhat similar to nutrition in humans. It follows the same five steps. Food is ingested through the mouth , mixed with saliva and passed through the oesophagus into the stomach
DIGESTION OF A COW The food enter the first chamber of stomach – called Rumen (partially digested there) Ruminants eat grass and other plants that contain a carbohydrate called cellulose , which is difficult to digest. Cellulose – digesting bacteria and other microorganisms present in the rumen help to digest this substance. These bacteria are not present in human beings. That is why a digestive system cannot digest grass.
Then the food goes to second chamber and brought back into the mouth for further chewing. After it is chewed thoroughly, it goes back to the second chamber. From here it enters the third chamber where water and minerals are absorbed. The food finally enters the last chamber of the stomach where the digestive juice act on it. From here, the partially digested food enters the small intestine. It receives secretions from liver and pancreas for the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
