The Human Digestive System Understanding How Our Body Processes Food

Introduction to the Digestive System The digestive system helps in breaking down food into nutrients that the body can absorb. Key parts: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and associated glands.

The Mouth and Salivary Glands Mouth: Food enters the digestive system. Teeth break food into smaller pieces. Saliva: Produced by salivary glands; contains enzymes (like amylase) to break down carbohydrates. Tongue: Helps mix food with saliva and aids swallowing.

Esophagus A muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach. Peristalsis: A wave-like movement that pushes food down toward the stomach.

The Stomach A muscular organ that churns food and mixes it with digestive juices. Secretes hydrochloric acid and enzymes (like pepsin) for protein digestion. Chyme: Semi-liquid form of food after digestion in the stomach.

The Small Intestine Duodenum, Jejunum, and Ileum are the main sections of the small intestine. Most nutrient absorption happens here. Enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver aid digestion. Villi: Tiny, finger-like projections that increase surface area for absorption.

The Pancreas, Liver, and Gallbladder Pancreas: Produces digestive enzymes and releases insulin. Liver: Produces bile, which helps break down fats. Gallbladder: Stores bile and releases it into the small intestine when needed.

The Large Intestine (Colon) Absorbs water and salts from undigested food. Forms solid waste (feces), which is later excreted. Parts: Cecum, colon, rectum.

Rectum and Anus Rectum: Stores feces before it is expelled. Anus: The opening where waste exits the body.

Conclusion Recap of the digestive system's function: digestion, absorption, and waste elimination. Importance of a healthy digestive system for overall health.
