Color Theory in Photoshop Digital Skills Manami Ishimura

Hue This is Color wheel that shows an organization for the relationship of the basic color.

Color Wheel in Photoshop There are three color balance in photoshop -Cyan & Red -Magenta & Green -Yellow & Blue

RGB vs. CMYK RGB  is what monitors use for colors because monitors give off or “emit” light. The distinction here is that RGB is an  additive color  palette. The more color you add to it, the brighter it gets. Add all colors together, you get white. The brightest of color.  CMYK  is what you would see on a printed page because pigment or color “absorbs” light. CMYK is a  subtractive color  palette. The more colors you add, the darker it gets because pigment on printed material absorbs light.

Digital – RGB Print (Ink) - CMYK *If you change the mode from RGB to CMYK, You CANNOT get back the original color of RGB even though you change the mode again. SO You must save the original file before changing to CMYK for printing.

Chroma (Saturation) Chroma, intensity or saturation is brightness of a color.

Saturation in Color Window *Presetting view

Value Value is lightness or Darkness of a hue.

3D Color Wheel in Photoshop (Color Panel)

Tint / Tone / Shade Tint is any hue or mixture of pure colors with “ white ” added Tone is any hue or mixture of pure colors to which only pure “ gray ” is added (equal amounts of black and white) Shade is any hue or mixture of pure colors with only “ black ”. Also, Tone is sometimes used for two meanings: one is the meaning above and the other is balance between saturation and value.

Basic Color Combinations

Direct Harmony This is the most basic harmony. It is a point opposite to the key color on the wheel. This “opposite” color is refereed to as the complementary harmony. Virtually all color harmonies (except Analogous) are a variation of the direct harmony. Complementary color schemes are tricky to use in large doses ( can make a halation ) Complementary colors are really bad for text as both colors have a similar “strength” and will fight for attention) Reference: https://zevendesign.com/color-harmony-hulk-wears-purple-pants/

Halation Complementary colors are standard color combinations as strong color impact. However, you have to carefully use the color combination. If it is too high saturation, it create halation and it is just irritating eyes. Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj1FK8n7WgY&t=198s

Split Complementary Color Rather than the point opposite the key color on the wheel, the split complementary takes the two colors directly on wither side of the deviating from the basic harmony between the key color and the complementary color. The color scheme has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary color scheme but has less tension. The split complimentary color scheme is a sage choice for virtually any design as it is near impossible to mess up and always looks good. Analogous Harmony Analogous Harmony is also referred to as related colors , these are the colors directly on the left and right of your key color. They usually match up quite well and create a serene and comfortable design. While this color harmony can be pleasing to the eye, it can also come across as monotone . If you are going for a design that is primarily one color, this is a good choice. Reference: https://zevendesign.com/color-harmony-hulk-wears-purple-pants/

Color Theory - Analogue Analogue color combination in low saturation, black base Reference: https://zevendesign.com/color-harmony-hulk-wears-purple-pants/

Triadic Harmony Triadic Harmony is also called Triadics or Triads . This refers to the color two spaces to either side of the key color’s complement Essentially, with the triadic harmony, you are using three equally distanced colors on the color wheel. As such, you are stretching the basic idea of color harmony and thus this harmony is best used with only touches of color. Too much of each color and your design appears to have too many colors and can be too vibrant Let one dominate and the two others for accent or desaturate all three colors and only use triadic colors in small spots or touches. Tetradic Harmony Similar to the Triadic, except that there are four points, all equally distanced on the color wheel. It can be a design simply using tow sets of complementary colors . This harmony is good when you have numerous elements that all need to stand out on their own, such as a poster that features 4 or more characters. By using colors equally distant on the color wheel, each character gets equal attention. Reference: https://zevendesign.com/color-harmony-hulk-wears-purple-pants/

Advanced Color Combination

This color combination use only one hue, identity color Creating variety of color changing only saturation.

This color combination using analogy color combination Changing saturation and in two hues.

Dominant color is using identity color changing value and saturation But the narrow range of value.

Tone on tone is the color combination using identity color changing value and saturation in wider ranges

Dominant Tone is the color combination using random hues identifying same saturation.

Tone in Tone Tone in Tone is the color combination using random hues identifying same saturation and value.

Tonal is the color combination using random hues picking only intermediate tone.

Picolore Clear contrast color combinations are in harmony

Tricolore You can find the harmonic color combination in flags. They used primary colors in high saturation and black or white. High tone color combination are harmonized. The black and white in these color design is the role of harmonizing these primary colors. You can also use low saturation or value as a harmonizing color using vivid color combination.

Tricolore Example

Weight of Color Lighter Heavier Psychologically, we perceive color along with senses like weight and temperatures.

Temperature of Color A Hue of blue is identified as cooler color and of red is warmer color.

Shading

Different Types of Shading One Hue / Value Two Hue –magenta (light) Blue (dark) Two hue – Cyan (light) Blue (dark)

Changing Color Value/ Compression and Extension Black and white make different effects. Black compresses the shape of it but white extend the shape. Naturally, the effect interact its surrounding. Also, value depend on surrounding hues. The center green appears much lighter on the black background than on the white.

Base/ Main/ Accent Proportion of base, main, accent color are vital color design. The tint yellow is the base color, green is the accent color, brawn and orange are main color
