TYPES OF COMPUTER Digital Computers Analog Computers Hybrid Computers

Digital Computers Digital Computers are the Computers which deal with discrete quantities . It operates on data, including magnitudes, letters, and symbols, that are expressed in binary form—i.e., using only the two digits 0 and 1

Features of digital computers The speed of Digital computers is very high. These computers are more accurate compared to others. These convert the data into binary digits. These computers are widely used in business & scientific applications .

Digital Computers Purpose wise Digital Computers Size & Performance wise Digital Computers

Purpose - wise Digital Computers :- Special – purpose computer General – purpose computers &

Special purpose computers : - These computers are designed for a specific task. The instruction to carry out the task is permanently stored in the computers. These computers are efficient but not versatile.

General purpose computers : - These computers can work on different tasks {different types of programs}. These programs are not permanently stored. These computers are very versatile.

Size & Performance - wise Digital Computers :- embedded micro mini Mainframes super

EMBEDDED COMPUTERS:- Computer exists in wide range of sizes and powers. These computers are typically programmed for a specific task. Small computer are embedded within the circuitry of appliances. Example: - Televisions, Washing machine, Wrist watches these appliances are typically programmed before itself for a specific task.

What are Micro computers? A Micro computer is a computer whose CPU is a microprocessor. These computers are single user system. These are mainly used in – homes, offices, schools, shops. Microprocessor Microprocessor is a processor whose all components are on a single integrated circuit chip.

Micro computers : THREE MAJOR CATEGORIES OF MICRO COMPUTERS . PDAs Desktop computers Workstations

PDAs 1. Programmable Computers vary enormously in their computational power, speed & physical size. The smallest of these computers is PDAs. PDAs are also called as Personal Digital Assistants. EXAMPLE Cellular phone, notepad, Scheduling systems & address books Programmable Computer OR

Desktop computers These are typically used in business, home, school etc. They have very large amount of internal memory to store hundreds of programs & documents. But for laptop these are more compact, flat light weight. The desktops are large in size compared to laptops .

Worksations:- 1.Workstations are similar to Desktop Computers. 2.These computers have greater memory and extensive mathematical abilities. 3.They are found in Scientific and Industrial field since they require high level of computational abilities.

SOME MICROCOMPUTERS

Mini Computers :- These computers are also called as mid-range server. Mini computers are mainly multi user system. Mini computers have greater storage capacity & larger memories compared to micro computers. EXAMPLE :- PDP-11,VAX-7500MAGNUM

Mainframe Computers These computers are designed to handle huge volumes of data & information. These are multiuser computers they can support more than 100 users at a time. These are very large and expensive computers. These computers have high speed and large memory compared to others. EXAMPLES :- ICL 39, CDC 6600, IBM 3090/600, IBM 4381, VAX 8842.

Mainfame computers

SUPER COMPUTERS Super Computers are the most powerful computers among digital computers. These computer consists of a several processor running simultaneously which makes the computer to run faster. These computer can handle huge amount of calculation & can perform billions of instructions per second. These are very expensive which can approximately range from 15-20 million dollars. These computers are extensively used in Space Research stations, Weather Forecasting, Aerodynamic modeling, Metrology, Seismology etc. EXAMPLES :- CDC-205, ETA GF-10,PARAM, PACE, NEC SX-2, CRAY. X-MP 14

Super Computers

QUIZ What is the full form of following? PDAs :- C-DAC :- 2. Minicomputers are also called as_______________? 3. The power of Supercomputer is measured in terms of? 4. How can you correlate Digital Computers, Analog Computers, Special Purpose Computers and General Purpose Computer? Personal Digital Assistants Centre for development of Advanced Computing Mid-range servers
