WESTERN THOUGHT

WESTERN THOUGHT Thomas Aquinas believed that the body constitutes individuality generally acknowledged to be "instilled with a style of thinking based on dichotomy and binary opposition. There is a distinction between the notion of the thinking subject that stands in natural opposition to observable reality. Believes in separation and has distinction. Frank Johnson outlined four categories on how the term self is used in contemporary western discussion Analytic: tendency to see reality as an aggregate of parts. Self is an observer separate and distinct from the external object. Monotheistic: involved the tendency toward unitary explanations of phenomena and a closed-system view of self. Man was created by the image of God. Involves unitary and omnipotent power. Individualism: self-expression and self-actualization are important ways of establishing one's self Materialistic/Rationalistic : discredit explanations that do not use analytic-deductive modes of thinking

EASTERN THOUGHT

EASTERN THOUGHT Concerned in maintaining relationship with others, they are more focused on others and the feeling of others. They are dependent to their group members. They grow up and knew themselves as a group. Vedas: earliest religious writing in the east which formed the Hindu philosophy and dharma. Chants and hymns illustrate the eastern mindset of nondual universe but rather a creation that is completely unified with the creator with no distinction Dharma: principle of cosmic order Religion is one of the influences in the east in regards to developing one’s self.

RELIGIOUS GROUPS

BUDDHISM composed of teachings of Buddha. Buddhist tradition self is not an entity, a substance or an essence but rather it is a dynamic process. It is interdependent and ever changing. Believed that self is not permanent and is changing. Their practices are designed to lead to a new experience of self anatta "no-self or no-soul". It is a concept that the sense of being a permanent, autonomous self is an illusion.

CONFUCIANISM believed that the quest for the self in terms of substance, of spirit does not exist. They believed that the concept of self is that of personality. person's character/personality something that exist inherently and something that is formed through upbringing and the environment. It is an achieved state of moral excellence rather than a given human condition. CONFUCIANISM FOUR BEGINNINGS it could be explained in western terms as "pre-self” or "potential self. Jen means good will, sympathy towards others, politeness, and generosity Yi mean the rightness and respect of duty Li means having the right to practice propriety in all that you do. Propriety means demonstrating your inner attitude in your outer expressions. Chih means wisdom; expressed by putting Jen, Yi and li into practice

TAOISM rejects hierarchical vies of the self, society, or cosmos. It does not regard self as an extension of social relationship. It believes that self is one of the countless manifestations of the ___. It is an extension of the cosmos. Chuang-tzu "the perfect man has no self; the spiritual man has no achievement; the true sage has no name." his conception of selfhood entails conscious self-transformation leading to the attributes of a balanced life in harmony with both nature and society.

ARABIC self does not have any property of goodness or evil. It has to be nurtured and self-regulated, so that it can progress into something good or evil through its thoughts and actions Nafs Arabic word that means self that is written in the Holy Qur'an. It pertains to the psyche (body) and the soul.

VIEWS OF SELF COMPARISON

WESTERN EASTERN Self is a social construction which is symbolically and signally created between and among social beings A gentleman by following the moral way consisting of the virtues of love, righteousness, wisdom, propriety and loyalty in order to promote harmony in society (Confucianism) Phenomenological object which can be productively studied through as a series of evanescent actions, self is multidimensional entity Detachment and desireless to reach nirvana; reciprocal relationship; compassion to other humans for belief that we are part of the same ever-changing universe Self is an interpersonal unit Attainment of liberation in the identification of Atman and Brahman through the Four Yogas. Self is intimately connected to bodily experience both ontogenetically and here and now awareness   Self is both phenomenal and non-phenomenal   Self-acquired substance according to semantic, syntactic and pragmatic   Self is a social construction which is symbolically and signally created between and among social beings
