STUDENT NAME : M DILAWAR SUBJECT : EDUCATION Prof. ZULQARNAIN DEPARTMENT : BS ENGLISH LITERATURE SEMESTER : II ENROLLMENT NO: FUUAST, AH CAMPUS, KARACHI   PRESENTATION TOPICS: OLD AND MODERN CONCEPT OF DISCIPLINE TYPES OF DISCIPLINE PUNISHMENT ,THEORIES OF PUNISHMENT

DISCUSS OLD AND MODERN CONCEPT OF DISCIPLINE.   WHAT IS DISCIPLINE? THE word discipline is derived from a Latin word Discipliues which mean follower, believer or student. Literally, this word means obedience and following the instructions without any hesitation. In its limited view, discipline means to adopt and obey. Discipline is an effective source of managing educational activities for the achievement of objectives. Concept of discipline: The concepts of discipline have remained under change with the pace of time. The discipline enforced in Dark Age, still exists in many backward societies .

Old concept: The old concept was completely authoritarian giving concept was inhuman, so a resistance was developed against it. No one was prepared to share with sincerity and rules and regulations were carried out as a formality. Societies imposing such discipline were regarded as undemocratic, rigid and backward societies. The old concept of discipline was largely witnessed in primitive societies. Officials, authorities and rulers used to keep general public under their thumbs and they themselves were the only source of determining the right and wrong of their acts. Western societies were arrogantly captured and controlled by the church. The misconception of considering punishment as a source of improvement is highly common in teachers several uneducated parents are in favor of such teachers. They used to request the teachers to teach their children by adopting all measures the teachers deem fit. Discipline favoring the needs and desired of children

Modern Concept: Modern concept of discipline is largely supported by intellectuals and thinkers. They believe it as an act of respecting the innate desires of and individual. All sorts of punishments are rejected and highly opposed. They propose to build the confidence of the individual for involving him in any sort of work. Pressure and suppression are negative tactics which disappear shortly. Students may be assigned tasks according to their ability and aptitude. Such approach will surely enrich the classroom atmosphere and promote learning. The same mindset will be reflected in other social attitudes. When an individual realizes this fact that he is trusted by others he begins to trust others. Discipline based on freedom and respect positively affects the teaching learning process. According to this concept threats, punishment and fear are replaced by love, affection and guidance. Modern concept of discipline accelerates freedom, which is not restricted to students; it is availed by all participants .

Ii: DISCUSS TYPES OF DISCIPLINE There are three types of discipline now we discuss here External Discipline Internal Discipline Social Discipline Detail; External Discipline: External discipline is the discipline which is not rooted within the self of individual. It is the outcome of external force or pressure. Such discipline is also known as forced or coercive discipline. External discipline is based on fear and torture. Evils of fear and anger are developed in the personality of a child. He isolated himself from others or manage to take revenge by treating others in the way he has been treated.

For example, Armed forces are the example of external discipline. Soldiers are educated and trained to obey the orders of their superiors. Do or die is the famous saying of these forces. Imperialism and dictatorship is another example of external discipline where the word uttered by the king or the ruler are considered the law of the state. Individual are not recognized as living organisms with certain instincts, emotions, views and desires. INTERNAL DISCIPLINE: It is also named freedom or natural discipline. The discipline satisfying the innate tendencies and capacities of an individual is known as internal discipline. This is the modern concept of discipline which emerged as reaction against the evils of external discipline. In such discipline, rules and regulations are made according to people and people are not forced to change themselves according the specifications and limitations of rules. Each and every individual is given proper respect and provided a friendly atmosphere to work freely. It involves the individual by building his confidence and assigning the task suitable to his will and ability.

Force and pressures are out rightly rejected in such form of discipline. The inner core of self is motivated to accept the ownership of disciplinary rules. Internal discipline is actually a discipline from within. For example, respect and regard to parents and teachers is not imposed from outside, it is generated within the self. A child feels comfortable and enjoys respecting parents and teachers. Another example is the democratic form of governments in which people elect their representatives and follow their directives . Social Discipline: The concept of modern discipline based on voluntary role of individual. Individual is free to a path increasing his ability in society and traditions and adopting socially value to make the life successful. This is neither external nor internal. It is the outcome of the social setup and the values, accepted as useful, after a long practice. Individual considers them appropriate for his social adjustment and so practices accordingly.

For example, Culture is an example of social discipline. Language, dresses, customs and traditions are not adopted under any law or force; they are practiced and adjustment which are social in nature. Teaches can promote social discipline by abiding the social rules. Their regularity and punctuality will motivate their students. Curriculum is the master plan of injecting social pupils. Punishment: Punishment is a forceful motive but since a long time is used as a weapon to enforce discipline in schools and colleges. Fear and threat of punishment work as a motive and pupils follow the disciplinary rules There are several forms of punishment introduced in educational institutions; a few to them are: To show anger and unwillingness. Blaming and scolding on incomplete work or misbehavior. Ban or availing interval, break or leave. Confinement of pupil in vacant classroom, or corner and shifting his seat. Serving written notices, displaying on boards or asking pupils to surrender their apology in writing. Seizing or withdrawing the awards and tiles already given. For example suspending the proctorship from a pupil.

Giving corporal punishment by hitting pupils with hands, stick, scale or some other thing. Imposing financial fines. The above punishments are introduced when pupils fail to do their work, misbehave with others, steal books, pencils of others, damage school property, Services are suspended promotion are delayed occurred in the forms of punishment. Theories of punishment: The concept of punishment is as old as the human society itself. It should be admitted that punishment is not introduced just for the sake of punishment, it carries several hidden objectives. Different theories of punishment, now we discuss here Revenge theory: Punishment is given as a reaction of certain act considered in disciplinary. Pupils are punished by teacher as revenge. Punishments resulted out of revenge are fully anti human act and are discarded at all levels. Punitive theory: Educational institutions formulate their disciplinary rules and regulations to speed up the working. Regularity, punctuality, cleanliness, attendance and assignments. Safety and Security theory: Punishment is for the safety and security of children’s and pupils from further irregularities opposing the laws of institutions and state and protect society from damages.

Reform theory: The main reason behind punishments is to introduce reforms and improve the role of pupil. Discipline based on care and affection of children inspires them to respond in the same manner. Precautionary theory: Punishment is introduced to control the evils and train pupils to practice according to the accepted norms. Students are expected to avoid the repetition of errors and change their behavior. This is Presented/Submitted by Mr. Dilawar . Thanks, Dear Sir May you live long!
