•Direct speech is directly spoken by
speaker
•Indirect speech, also known as
Reportedspeech, is the process of
paraphrasing or reporting someone
else's words.
Defining Direct and Indirect Speech
•In direct speech, we quote the speaker's
exact words, using quotation marks.
•In reported speech, we report
what someone said without using
quotation marks. It involves
paraphrasing the original
statement.
Direct vs Indirect Speech
1.STATEMENT (BERITA)
He said to me “I don’t have any money”
He said to me that he didn’t have any money.
2.QUESTION (PERTANYAAN)
a.Yes / No Question
They asked me, “Are you happy today?”
They asked me if / whether I was happy that day.
b.Wh Question
She asked him, “Why did you come late yesterday?”
She asked him why he had come late the day before.
3.COMMAND / PROHIBITION (PERITAH/ LARANGAN)
He ordered me, “meet me at seven tonight”
He ordered me to meet him at seven that night.
She warned me, “Don’t sit on this chair!”
She warned me not to sit on that chair.
DIRECT & INDIRECT SPEECH
•Kalimat tak langsung akan mengalami perubahan tenses
bila kata kerja dalam induk kalimat berbentuk past,
misalnya:
•Told, said, asked etc.
Example:
•he told me…, She said to me…., They asked her…etc.
➢Andika says, “I goes to campus on Mondays”.
1.Andika says that he goes to campus on Mondays.
2.Andika said that he went to campus on Monday.
