According to Britannica, social sciences are any discipline or branch of science that deals with human behavior in its social and cultural aspects.

The following are the disciplines within the social sciences: 1. Anthropology 2. Demography 3. Economics 4. Geography 5. History 6. Linguistics 7. Political Science 8. Psychology 9. Sociology

applied social sciences are those academic social science disciplines, professions and occupations which use basic social science knowledge and theories to make an impact on the daily life of communities, organizations and persons and help solve different social problems and issues.

1. Counseling is an academic discipline that provides guidance to individuals 2. Social Work is an academic discipline and a practice-based profession that concerns itself with individuals, families, groups, and communities to enhance social functioning 3. Communication studies or communication sciences is an academic discipline that deals with processes of human communication and behavior Main Disciplines of Applied Social Sciences :

1. Facilitating behavior change. 2 . Improving the client’s ability to establish and maintain relationships . 3 . Enhancing the client’s effectiveness and ability to cope. 4 . Promoting the decision-making process and facilitating client potential . 5 . Development Goals of Counseling

1. Ultimate goals are philosophical ideas that can be reasonably expected from counseling. 2. Intermediate goals relate to the reasons for seeking counseling and usually require several sessions to achieve them. Help the client adjust to changes. 3. Immediate goals Encouraging the client to verbalize an unexpressed feeling is an example of these goals. Encourage the client to verbalize unexpressed emotions. Three C ategories of Counselling

Principles of Counseling

1 . Principle of acceptance – accept patients regardless of their physical, psychological, social, economical and cultural conditions. 2. Principle of communication - communication should be verbal as well as non-verbal and should be skillful. 3 . Principle of empathy – Empathy is the ability to identify with a person. It conveys a feeling of acceptance and understanding of the client’s situation. Principles of Counseling

4. Principle of non-judge – show an open and non judgmental attitude regarding a patient’s complaints. 5 . Principle of confidentiality - always keep the patient’s personal information, and the problem strictly secret and assure the patient about the same. Principles of Counseling

6. Principle of individuality - treat each patient as unique with specific needs and respect his problem as well. 7 . Principles of non-emotional involvement - avoid getting emotionally involved with the patient and avoid getting carried away with his feelings. Principles of Counseling
