“Man is a Social Animal” THE EMERGENCE OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Greek Great Philosopher Aristotle believed that we are all born and raised in a society. We belong to a particular group and we share a certain territory. We interact with one another and build relationship in the hope of pursuing a better life. We may share a distinct culture, same political dynamics, or similar institutions. As rational animals, we use reason in order to satisfy our curiosity and discover the how and why of so many things around us. THE EMERGENCE OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

According to ( Bining and Bining , 1952) There are 3 broad categories of Human Knowledge. HUMAN KNOWLEDGE 1. NATURAL SCIENCE 2. SOCIAL SCIENCE 3. HUMANITIES

Natural Sciences belong to biology, chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics to name some major disciplines belonging from this particular domain. The field of the natural Sciences aims to explain and predict various phenomena in nature. NATURAL SCIENCES

Social Sciences belong those subjects that relate to the foundation, establishment and growth of human society. Some Major discipline of the social sciences include Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, and Political Science. SOCIAL SCIENCES

The humanities comprised the different branches of knowledge that tend to humanize humans as they express themselves in various forms. These include art and art history, literature and music are among others. HUMANITIES

NORM – A standard or pattern, especially of social behavior, that is typical or expected from a group. SOCIETY – Came from the latin word societas that is derived from the noun Socius meaning comrade, friend or ally. THE SCIENCE AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

CHARACTERISTICS OF SCIENCE CHARACTERISTICS EXPLANATION Empirical A phenomenon should be observable using the different senses. Propositional Things are explained in the form of statements or generalizations. Logical Employs the rules of logic in order to validate inferences. Public Ideas a re communicated from one scientist to another. Problem-Solving Presents rational explanations about unexplained observations. Continuous Knowledge is built upon by previous and future research on the subject.

Historically speaking, humans have developed various means to solve problems that may have existed and confronted them since the beginning of the time. By way of the Scientific method, we are able to generate knowledge about the universe, earth, humans, plants, animals and all forms of life. SCIENTIFIC METHOD
