Discipline & Ideas in Social Sciences by ROSE ANN M. DANLAYON Quarter 1 Week 1 lesson

Define social science as the study of society Distinguish social sciences from the natural sciences and from the humanities.  Illustrate situations and context of early scholars in the development of social science can be applied.. At the end of the module, you should be able to:

Day 1 Who are you and what do you contribute in the society?

1. When you hear the term “ Social ” What comes into your mind?

2. How about the word, “ Science ”?

Social + Science what concept do we come up with?

Social Science: The field of human knowledge that deals with all aspects of the group life of human beings. So, it is subject to change with the changes of human behavior.

10 disciplines of social science Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political science, Psychology Sociology Demography

Anthropology  is known as the 'science of humanity'. Anthropologists explore topics relating to the human experience. This includes human behaviour , cultural relations, and how the evolution of humanity has influenced society's structure. Archaeology  is the study of humanity through material remains of past life and behaviour . Similar to anthropology, archaeology explores past life and cultures, although this relies much more on the evidence from material remains.

Economics  looks at the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. When studying economics at postgraduate level you can choose to take a close view or a broad one, but in general, economics involves looking at how the economic systems of the world work. Though many of us may remember  geography  as the subject at school that involved maps, it goes beyond that – analysing population, the land itself, the relationship between the two and often linking to the earth sciences (such as  geology ). At postgraduate level, you'll be able to specialise in a particular branch of geography – such as oceanology , environmental management or tourism geography.

History  is a broad social science subject that involves studying particular past time periods.  law  will give you the opportunity to look at a variety of legal systems, and to focus on a particular area – contract law, international law or criminal law, to name but a few.  Linguistics  is the study of language – looking at how human language is formed, processed and used in different contexts. Rather than learning to speak a particular language, this social science subject is more about how language itself works.

Political science is the study of politics and power from domestic, international, and comparative perspectives. It entails understanding political ideas, ideologies, institutions, policies, processes, and behavior, as well as groups, classes, government, diplomacy, law, strategy, and war. Psychology - the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior.

TWO MAIN BRANCHES OF NATURAL SCIENCE: 1. LIFE SCIENCE • or Biological Science 2. PHYSICAL SCIENCE • Physics • Astronomy • Chemistry • Earth Science

Refers to the study of the ways in which the human experience is processed and documented. Humanities

Encompasses the field of: Philosophy, Literature, Religion, Art, Music, Language

Philosophy - the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline. Literature - written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit. Religion - the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods.

What is the difference between humanities and social sciences

What is the difference between humanities and sciences? The humanities typically are considered more critical and analytical, dealing with the philosophical question of what makes us human . The social sciences, on the other hand, use a more scientific approach, essentially applying similar methodology as the natural sciences to the study of humans in society.

Let's divide the class into 3 groups:

Definitions and/or samples will be given. Then, the group which can raise the answer with a correct spelling will get 1 point. After it, the groups will classify it to whether it is natural Science, Social Science or Humanities. but wait!!!

• If it belongs to Social Science, the group will dance a tiktok dance

• If it belongs to Natural Science, the group will dance a traditional dance

• If it belongs to Humanities, the group will dance aerobics,

a science that deals with matter and energy and their interactions.
