INTRODUCTION Human Wildlife Conflict is a term generally used for describing negative interactions between humans and animals. The conflict poses a threat to the well-being of both local population of humans as well as wild animals in form of retaliatory killings and reduced support of locals for conservation The main cause is excessive pressure on resources due to rise in human population which stands strong at 7.7 billion today. Problem is aggravated in India as it is a developing country with a high population density and rural population dependence on forest resources.
INTRODUCTION Human conflict with leopards has been a long withstanding problem in the state of Uttarakhand. It is spread throughout the state. Various instances of human injury as well as death are recorded every year. Livestock depredation by leopards is very common in the state. The leopards are highly versatile and stealthy. Therefore, can survive and persist very close to human habitations
OBJECTIVES To map the spatial magnitude of human-leopard conflict in Uttarakhand. To assess the temporal dynamics of human-leopard conflict in Uttarakhand.
METHODOLOGY Field Method Collection of secondary data in form of records of compensation paid by forest department from respective forest divisions of Uttarakhand. Participation in workshop on human wildlife conflict conducted by forest department. Analytical Method Data translated into English and subsequently digitized into analyzable format using Microsoft Excel (Microsoft Inc 2016) and ArcMap 10.5 (ESRI).
METHODOLOGY Exploratory Data Analysis The data was translated into English. It was then digitized and arranged into analyzable format in Excel. Exploratory data analysis done in Excel to understand the temporal pattern and trend of conflict in the state. Analysis also done with respect to district, age, gender and population.
METHODOLOGY Mapping Mapping of conflict was done in ArcMap at the village level using the village shapefile of Uttarakhand. Kernel Density Estimator (KDE) tool was used to create heat map of conflict hotspot in the state. Maxent was used for risk prediction mapping of attacks on humans in the state of Uttarakhand. Environmental covariate layers used in the modeling were Elevation, Terrain Ruggedness, NDVI and Nightlight.
RESULT Kernel Density of attacks on humans by Leopards in the state of Uttarakhand (2015-19). Graph showing total attacks on humans by leopard (2015-19) in respective districts of Uttarakhand
Box plot showing seasonal variation in attacks by leopards on humans (2015-19) Graph showing attacks carried out on different age gradations Graph showing temporal trend of attacks on Humans Graph showing gender based attacks carried by leopards.
Graph showing attacks carried out by leopards in relation to population of villages. Graph showing magnitude of various animals killed. Graph showing temporal trend of livestock depredation Graph showing magnitude of deaths of leopards due to various reasons
Risk prediction map of conflict on the basis of attacks on humans by Leopards in the state of Uttarakhand (2015-19). Model fit of the Maxent model as shown by the ROC curve.
