Types of conductors
In University of Gujrat the 11kv transmission line consist of different types of conductors for the
overhead transmission line. The conductors used are dog, osprey, ant, and rabbit. The conductor
usage depends upon the current rating resistance, reactance and diameter of the conductor.

Dog Conductor
Range
This specification offer for manufacturing, testing before shipping supply and deliverance of all
aluminum alloy stranded conductors for use in 33/11 KV lines and L.T.Overhead Electricity. The
distribution system as per details is as given following.
Conductor size
7/4.26mm (100mm2 nominal aluminum area) = Equivalent ASCR Dog
Standard
The conductor shall fulfill with the following Standard Specifications which shall mean latest
revision with amendment / charge adopted and published unless specifically affirmed otherwise
in the specification
Material and workmanship
Material used in the production of the conductor shall be of the highest quality of its kind and
can be obtained except for where modified by the specification, must abide by all respect to the
standards laid down by the Indian Standard Institution. The conductor is manufactured with hot
treated aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy wire containing almost 0.5% magnesium and nearly
0.5% silicon and having electrical and mechanical properties. All wire (strands) will be
convincingly smooth, regular and should be free from all defects such as die-marks, scratches,
and abrasions etc. after sketching and also after the stranding. The wire should be smooth and
free from all imperfections such as spills, splits, etc. The ended conductor shall have a smooth
surface without any surface cavity, abrasions, scuffs marks and must be free from dirt , etc. grit
finished conductors should also be free from slack strands. The end of the conductor is properly
sealed to stop unwinding of the strands. Particular care must be taken by the supplier /
manufacturer during production, handling, packing and transportation of the conductor to see
that the surface is not scratched, cut or dented in any way.
Current Rating of Dog conductor
Conductor current rating of dog is different at different temperatures. Temperature of 65 ᴼ C can
carry current of 232amperes.At temperature of 75 ᴼ C can carry current of 283amperes.At 90 ᴼ C
can carry the current of 343amperes. The wire used in the production of stranded conductor
before stranding shall fulfill with all applicable requirements. The wire should be regularly and
narrowly stranded. Lay ratio (ratio of the axial length of one complete turn of the helix produced
by an individual wire in a stranded conductor outer diameter of the helix) is within the limits of
maximum 14 and minimum 12. The values of the coefficient of linear expansion for AAAC are
23.0x10-6.

Rabbit conductor
Rabbit conductor is used for long transmission lines. The criterion for this is the ratio of
aluminum as given
Standard
The conductor diameter is shown as wire Dia. Al: 6/3.35mm.
Performance of Rabbit conductor
This allowable long-time working temperature for the aerial conductor is 70
o
C.Under the chance
that rarely takes place climate and ice coverage rate low in heavily ice area, the major stress of
cable at the lower point of the sag should not exceed 60 % of short-time destructive power.
When concerning conductors, the conductor nearby the connecting tube cannot be spectacularly.
Otherwise, the power conductors operate in unbalance unbalanced. After installing connectors,
the linking tube should be decorated by moisture-proof varnish in order to protect it from
corrosion. Under installation, the arc down stress of all the conductors should be the same.
Within the allowable distance of crossing buildings or dropping to the ground, stress can be 10-
15% higher than normal stress. The electrical performance of ACSR is indicated DCΩ / km
(20
o
C). The resistivity of the hard aluminum wire for stranded wire should not greater than
28.264 nΩ international standard value.
Tensile Strength
The rate of tensile strength ACSR was measured across all aluminum conductors tensile strength and also
tensile strength steels. The tensile strength of all aluminum conductors are measured along with the
results of all cross sections of aluminum conductors multiplied by minimum tensile strength of
subsequent size specified in the standard for aluminum wire. The tensile strength of all steel wire is
measured along with the results of all cross sections of steel wire multiplied by the stress at 1%
elongation of equivalent size specific in the standards for steel wire.
Current Rating
The current rating of conductors varies with respect to temperature. Temperature of 65ᴼc is 160
amperes. Temperature of 75ᴼc it bears 194amperes.At current temperature of 90ᴼc can carry
234amperes.
Ant conductor
Ant conductor used for overhead transmission lines e.g. 11KV system. The conductors are
prepared by aluminum strands. Conductor is also known as the aluminum stranded conductor.
This conductor is manufactured from aluminum electrolytic ally fine, having purity of minimum
99.5% of aluminum. Conductor is used mostly in urban areas and the spacing is small and the

support is near. All aluminum conductors are manufactured of one or more strands of aluminum
wire depending upon the end use. The conductors are also used extensively in costal because it
consists of very high level of resistance corrosion.
Service Performance of Ant conductor
This maximum acceptable long-time operating temperature for aerial conductor is 70
o
c.Under
unusual conditions occurring climate and ice coverage rate low in heavy ice area, the major
stress of cable at the lowest point of the sag should not exceed 60% of the short-time destructive
power. When connecting conductors, the conductor next to the concerning tube cannot be
dramatically. Otherwise, the power conductors operate in very unbalanced. After connectors are
installed, the concerning tube should be highlighted by moisture-proof varnish to keep it from
corrosion. Under installation, the arc down stress of all the conductors should be of the same
value. Within the allowable distance of crossing buildings or dropping to the ground, stress can
be 10-15% higher than standard stress.
Performance Products
The electrical performance of AAC and ACSR is indicated DCΩ / km (20oC). The resistivity of
the hard aluminum wire for stranded wire should not greater than 28.264 nΩ international
standard value. The rate tensile strength of AAC is recorded in the effect of the total cross-
segment of all aluminum conductors multiplied by min. Tensile of corresponding size particular
in the standard for aluminum wire. The rate of tensile strength ACSR was recorded across all
aluminum conductors tensile strength and tensile strength steels. The tensile strength of all
aluminum conductors are recorded along with the consequences of all cross-sections of
aluminum conductors multiplied by minimum tensile strength of corresponding size specified in
the standard for aluminum wire. The tensile strength of all steel wire is recorded along with the
consequences of all cross-sections of steel wire multiplied by the stress at 1% elongation of
matching size particular in the standards for steel wire.
Application
Conductor (AAC and ACSR) have been extensively used in power transmission lines with a
range of voltage levels, because they have such good distinctiveness as simple structure,
expedient installation and continuance, low cost large transmission capability. And it is also
appropriate for lying across the river valley and the areas where special geographical features
exist.
Osprey conductor
Osprey conductors are used for long transmission lines. Conductor is used for heavy load line.
The conductors also comprise about 98% of aluminum conductor.

Service Performance
This allowable long-time working temperature for aerial conductor is 70ᴼc.Under the occasion
that hardly ever take climate and ice coverage rate low in heavy ice area, the leading stress of
cable at the lowest point of the sag should not exceed 70 % of short-time destructive power.
When concerning conductors, the conductor next to the connecting tube cannot be dramatically.
Otherwise, the power conductors operation is disturbed. After connectors are installed, the
connecting tube should be decorated by moisture-proof varnish to protect it from corrosion.
Under installation, the arc downing stress of all the conductors should be the same. Within the
allowable distance of crossing buildings or dropping to the ground, stress can be 5-10% higher
than regular stress.
Current Rating
The current rating of Osprey conductor is different at different temperatures. Current varies
directly related to temperature. Temperature of 65ᴼc can carry the current temperature of 75ᴼc
707amperes.At can carry current of 709amperes.At the temperature is 90ᴼc to carry the current
of 711amperes.
