DORSOPATHIES

INTRODUCTION D orsopathy refers to a condition impairing the backbone. These include various diseases of the back or  spine such as kyphosis .   Dorsalgia   refers to those conditions causing back pain.

TYPES Scoliosis  is a common spinal disease in which the spine has a curvature usually in the shape of the letter "C" or "S". This is most common in girls, but there is no specific cause for scoliosis.

Kyphosis   ( hump) is an abnormally excessive convex  kyphotic  curvature of the spine as it occurs in the cervical, thoracic and sacral regions. Normal inward concave curving of the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine is called  lordosis

Ankylosing spondylitis  ( AS ) is a type of arthritis in which there is long term inflammation of the joints of the  spine.Typically the joints where the spine joins the pelvis are also affected . Spondylolysis   is defined as a defect or stress fracture in the pars interarticularis of the vertebral arch .  The vast majority of cases occur in the lower lumbar vertebrae(L5 ), but spondylolysis may also occur in the cervical vertebrae.

Spondylolisthesis is the forward or anterior displacement of one vertebra over another, and commonly involving the fifth lumbar vertebra . Backward displacement is referred to as  retrolisthesis

Torticollis is a dystonic condition defined by an abnormal, asymmetrical head or neck position, which may be due to a variety of causes . It is also known as wry neck

Osteomyelitis  ( OM ) is infection and inflammation of the bone .  It can be usefully subclassified on the basis of the causative organism (pyogenic bacteria or mycobacteria) and the route, duration and anatomic location of the infection.

Kissing spine is defined as low-grade pain because the spinous processes, or sections of bone attached to the vertebrae, are too close together and impinge on each other.
