DOUBLE SKIN FACADE
FRAMING SYSTEM

DEFINITION
a pair of glass “skins” separated by an air
corridor.
main layer of glass is insulating .
air space between the layers of glass
acts as insulation againast temperature,
wind and sound.
sun shading devices are often located
between two skins.
width of cavity ranges from 10 cm to a
meter.

INTRODUCTION
SYSTEM

COMPONENTS

PASSIVE MODE DOUBLE SKIN FACADE

In cold climates, the air buffer works as a barrier
to heat loss. Sun-heated air contained in the
cavity can heat spaces outside the glass,
reducing the demand for indoor heating
systems.
In hot climates, the cavity can be vented outside the
building to mitigate solar gain and decrease the cooling
load. Excess heat is drained through a process known as the
chimney effect, where differences in air density create a
circular motion that causes warmer air to escape. As the air
temperature in the cavity rises, it is pushed out, bringing a
slight breeze to the surroundings while isolating against
heat gain.

CLASSIFICATION
There are different types of
classification for double skin facade. It
has been used for several envelope
function such as optimization of natural
lighting, and better ventilation system,
and thermal and acoustic insulation.
The classification figure out here is
based on the mode of working of facade
presenting 3 categories which are
independent on one another.
The types of Ventilation1.
3. The ventilation modes of the
facade
2. The partition of the facade

1. THE TYPES OF VENTILATION
3. The ventilation modes of the
facade
related to different
types of driving forces
of ventilation of cavity
between 2 glass
facades.
ventilation of the cavity
can be natural, fan
supported and
mechanical.
3 kinds of ventilation
system in double glass
facade.
250mm to 900mm 150mm to 900mm 500mm to 600mm

2. PARTITIONING OF FACADE
partitioning of cavity
shows that how the cavity
between two glass facade
situated is divided.
Ventliated DSF consider
as the dynamic part of
building which use
different strategies to
balance best interior
condition and
environmental
performance.

3. VENTILATION MODES OF FACADE
refers to the origin and the
destination of air circulating in
the ventilated cavity.
the ventilation mode is
independent of the type of
ventilation applied.

NATURAL LIGHTING IN DOUBLE SKIN FACADE
lighting devices can be placed in double
envelope system.
within one floor height, dsf can be divided into
3 sections.
the upper section is made of insulating glass
with integrated prismatic panels which
automatically adjusts itself as a function of the
altitude of the sun.
this panel has 2 functions, reflecting sunlight
toward the sunlight & admitting daylight into
the interior space.
the vision window is made of clear insulating
glass & is manually operated by the occupant
during the daytime.
the lower level window is automatically
controlled to stay closed when solar and
thermal insulation are desired.

STRUCTURE OF DSF
PRIMARY STRUCTURE1.
Columns, braces, beams, frames in steel
construction.
In concrete, add shear walls ans slabs.
In some super tall and non- standards
geometry buildings, floor slabs are also
“activated” meaning they provide
diaphragm action, whereas in much other
construction they merely rest on primary
elements.
SECONDARY STRUCTURE2.
facade steels like mullions and transoms
or other arrangements to hold cladding or
various other structural elements that
holds up secondary elements like
canopies, ceilings and decorative screens.

SECONDARY STRUCTURE
CANTILEVER BRACKET STRUCTURE
Facade brackets are available in
two main categories.
The first category of facade
brackets are the ones that can be
fixed on the edge of slabs. This
way the tensile load from the wind
are transferred into the end of
floor slab.
The second category of facade
backets are the ones that are fixed
on the top of the slab. This way
the horizontal loads from wind
and the vertical loads from dead
load and resultant loads are
transferred into the top of the
floor slab.

Use high tensile cables or stainless steel rods
to impose the loads of the facade on the
main structure.
This decreases the amount of solid structural
elements visible on the project, therefore
increasing the transparency of the facade.
Panels are framed by mullions on the vertical
edges and transoms on the horizontal edges.
Mullions and transoms are thermally broken to
prevent through the element so that
condensation does not occur.
Utilized curtain walling is identifiable by the
presence of split mullions and transoms on the
panel perimeters.

MERITS & DEMERITS
Reduce cooling and
heating demand;
Allow clear views and
natural light;
Improve insulation,
whether thermal and
acoustic;
Allow natural ventilation
and air renewal, creating a
healthier enivronment.
BENEFITS
Much higher initial
cost of construction;
Space consumption;
Maintenance
demand;
It may fail to function
properly if the context
changes significantly
(shading by other
buildings
DISADVANTAGES

CONCLUSION
General
When choosing the materials used for the construction of Double Skin Facade, caution should
be paid to the pane type and the shading device.
Opening Principles
The air velocity and the type of
flow inside the cavity depends on:
Depth of the cavity(both for
mechanical and natural
ventilation).
The type of the interior
openings (both for mechanical
and natural ventilation.
The type of exterior openings
(for natural ventilation).
Selection Of Glass
For the internal skin(facade):
thermal insulating double or
triple pane. The panes are
usually toughened and
unhardened float glass.
The gaps between the panes are
filled with air , argon, and
krypton.
For the external skin(facade):
toughened(tempered)
single pane. Sometimes it canbe
a laminated glass instead.
Thickness Of Glass
Outer Pane- 8mm thick
glass
Intermediate- 4mm to
6mm thick
Internal Pane-4mm thick
