WHAT IS DOWRY ? Any things refer to durable goods, cash and real or moveable property that bride’s family given to the groom and his parents as a condition of marriage , is called a dowry. Locally, dowry is called“dahej” in Hindi. Types of Dowry :- Dos Profectitia Dos Adventitia

What is Dowry Prohibition ? Dowry Prohibition is an act to prohibit the giving or taking of dowry. Dowry Death :- Dowry death means death of married women who are m urdered or driven to suicide by harassment and torture by their husband for not giving good dowry.

IS DOWRY SYSTEM A PROBLEM ? Yes , it is a very big problem because it- The demand for dowry makes young women a libality to her parents. Dowry has affected young women mentally, emotionally and physically. Many marriages have also been cancelled because of dowry. It is one of the evil of Indian society which has ruined lots of families.

EFFECTS of DOWRY SYSTEM Effect on the groom If good dowry is not given to bride’s family then they try to harm to the groom. Effect on the groom’s family It also affected groom’s family because they have to pay to bride’s family to get her married. Effect on the society Because of Dowry, our society gives more perference to the boy child.

Dowry Cases in India

Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 Dowry Prohibition Act , Indian law, enacted on May 1, 1961, intended to prevent the giving or receiving of a Dowry. Under the dowry p rohibition act, dowry i ncludes property,goods o r money given by anyone else in connection with Marriage.

IMPRISONMENT FOR A DOWRY SEEKER If any person after commencement of this act, gives or takes dowry, he shall be imprisoned up to 5 years or Rupees 15,000 fine. If any person demand dowry directly or indirectly from the bride’s family in that case he shall be imprisoned up to 6 months or fine up to Rs.10,000. If dowry was received when the woman was a minor, within three months after she has attained the age of eighteen years, he shall be imprisoned not less than 6 months or Rs. 5,000 fine.

Under the National Policy , Central Government Should direct all states to stop dowry and growing rate of death of bride for not coming dowry

Dowry Promotes domestic violence and gender inequality Dowry system initiates the act of violence in the society. When demand are not meet by the bride’s family then they try to harm to the groom. The dowry system is a complex social evil. An issue of gender inequality and woman empowerment is closely associated with the practice of dowry.

Causes of Dowry System Greed Expectation :- The primary reason behind dowry is the greediness of the bride’s family. Social Status :- The ancient India was quite liberal in the event of gift exchange during marriage is now transform into dowry system. Illiteracy :- With a literacy rate of 74.04% in the country it is mainly cause for dowry.

The Solution for Dowry System Education :- The origination of dowry because of illiteracy. When the women will educated then they can fight against this social evil. Making Women self-dependent :- To stop dowry women also become self – dependent. Gender Equality :- The ratio of women should also increase to control dowry system. Social Awareness Campaigns :- The social awareness campaign is the necessity to stop dowry.
