White Coat Debate?
Dr Jay Raj Sharma. [email protected]

An infectious disease fellow at the Harvard Medical School is
convinced that white coats are covered in bacteria and cause
infections.
Physicians in the US adopt the 2008 UK rule called “
bare below the elbows” which mandates all physicians must
wear shirts with sleeves above the elbows, no ties, and no
watches or rings.

Patients really like white coats
In 21 of those studies, It is found that patients
had strong preferences about what physicians
wore.
And it looks like patients more often prefer for
their doctors to wear formal clothing and white
lab coats than not.

Why dress code?
•Standard of excellence in health care is
reflected by the personal attention we give
every patient and by the attention to detail we
demonstrate when caring for our patients.
•Therefore, personal appearance should reflect a
tasteful, clean, crisp, precise look, with every
attention to detail.
•Our appearance should enhance our ability to
perform our job

Recommendation…
•Employees are expected to dress in an appropriate,
professional manner
•Dress should portrays an image of confidence and
security for patients.
•Cleanliness and neatness are absolutely necessary
at all times.
•Distracting themes in appearance or dress, low-cut
clothing, exposed midriff, evening wear, or sheer
clothing are unacceptable.
• Clinical staff - collared shirts or scrubs, and closed-
toed, non-sneaker shoes.
•Front-office staff should dress in "business casual."
and wear nametags

•Appearance and perception play a key role in
patient service.
•Any employee with body art “Tattoo” must
ensure that it is covered at all times.
•The dress-code policy not only protect the staff,
but also to protect the practice
