TYPES OF ULCERS YOU NEED TO KNOW Duodenal Ulcer VS Gastric Ulcer VS
ULCERS Two most common types are duodenum ulcer and gastric ulcer. Type depends on its location. Occur more frequently in: Men Post-menopausal women Family history of ulcers Type O blood
Duodenal Ulcers Epigastric pain occurs 2-3 hours after meals. Pain is relieved by eating meals. Most common type. Occurs in the duodenum. Melena occurs in duodenal ulcers. Melena is black tarry feces. Result of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Gastric Ulcers Pain is increased by eating food. Midepigastric pain occurs: 30 min. to 1 hr after meals. Vomiting is common. Occurs in patients over the age of 50. Erosion occurs in gastric mucosa. Normal or hyposecretion of stomach acid.
Comparison side by side Duodenal Ulcers Pain relieved by meal. Occurs 2-3 hrs after meal. Most common type. Melena occurs. Gastric Ulcers Pain increased by meal. Occurs 30m to 1hr after meal. Not as common. Vomiting occurs.
Diagnostic Tools Diagnostic tool is mainly endoscopy exam. Allows direct visualization and biopsies of the area. Upper GI studies Barium swallow Endoscopy exam Gastric analysis
Upper Gastrointestinal Studies Looks at the upper and middle section of GI tract. Barium contrast, fluoroscopy, and x-ray are used. Before exam, patient drinks a mix of barium and water.
Barium swallow Patient drinks a preparation of barium sulfate. X-rays follows the track of the barium sulfate preparation through the digestive system. Risk of hypersensitivity in clients to barium sulfate. Constipation could occur.
Endoscopy exam Endoscopy checks the interior lining of esophagus, stomach, and duodenum through endoscope. Tip of endoscope is inserted through the patient’s mouth, down the throat, and into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Could reveal what does not show up on the x-rays.
Gastric analysis Examines acids and secretions found in the stomach. Patient cannot eat after midnight before taking the gastric analysis test. Tube will be inserted into the nose, through throat, and esophagus into the stomach. After test, patient can resume normal diet allowed.
