Ypsilandis and Kantaridou (2007) defined EAP as “it refers mainly to the academic needs of students and of future professionals who would seek a career in the academic environment” what is English for academic purposes? EAP refers to a specialized branch of English language teaching and learning that focuses on developing the language skills necessary for academic settings, such as universities, colleges, and research institutions.

what is English for academic purposes? EAP programs and courses aim to equip students, typically non-native English speakers, with the language proficiency required to succeed in academic contexts, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

This course is basically used in business contexts, such as international trade, commerce, finance, insurance, and banking. ENGLISH FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS This will also enable the learners write concept/business papers, reports, minutes of meeting, and project proposals.

English for Medical Purposes (EMP) refers to 'the teaching of English for doctors, nurses, and other personnel in the medical professions. ENGLISH FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES EMP is designed to meet the specific English language needs of the medical learner, focuses on topics specific to the medical field, and focuses on a restricted range of skills which may be required by the medical learner ( Maher, 2008) .

Medical students, for example, have to read textbooks and articles, and write essays and clinical reports. ENGLISH FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES

Legal English is widely used by lawyers and legal professionals, whether they work in private or public institutions and organizations as: legal advisors, judges, and jurors. ENGLISH FOR LEGAL PURPOSES

Types of eap situation: 01 An English-speaking country 02 An English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) situation 04 A situation where all subject courses are taught in the national language, but English may be important for ancillary (helpful) reasons 03 A situation in which certain subjects, such as medicine, engineering, or science.

Teaching is done both pre-sessional and in-sessional courses. EAP in an English-speaking country The pre-sessional course generally run for between 4 and 12 weeks prior to the beginning of the academic year and focus on both academic language and the “study skills” related to all the main skills. 

EAP in an English-speaking country In-sessional work, however, runs in parallel with the subject courses and therefore provides the opportunity for integrated subject-language teaching and more specific work on the key skills of academic listening, writing and reading, as well as more “common-core” EAP courses.

In South-East Asian countries, such as Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia; Eap in An ESL situation English is used throughout the education system, in most cases from the primary school level, in others from the secondary level.

In Medical English, it is not always clear whether we are talking about the needs of medical students (EAP), or practicing doctors, or consultants in hospitals (EOP); each one of these groups needs awareness of and an ability to use different genres. Eap vs eop

Medical students, for example, have to read textbooks and articles, and write essays and short clinical reports. These are EAP needs. Eap vs eop Practicing - doctors have different needs; as well as reading specialist articles, they may prepare papers and slide presentations for conferences and, if working in an English speaking-country, interact with patients in English. These are EOP needs.
