Hartley, 2008
It is characterized by its formal tone, use of third-
person, clear focusonthe problem under
investigation, and precise word choice.
Academic writing
Academic text in English is linear.
There are four main language features
used in an academic text. It istosome
extent: formal, objective, explicit, and
accurate
Four Features of an Academic Text
Formality
the overall structure of academic writing is
formal and logical. It must be cohesive and
possess alogically organized flow of
ideas. This reflects the dignified stance a
writer takes in an academic text
Four Features of an Academic Text
Formality
In general, this means that in an academic text, the following
are notused:
a. Colloquial, trite and idiomatic expressions: “stuff”, “a lot of”,
“sort of”
b. Abbreviated forms: “can’t”, “doesn’t”, “shouldn’t”
c. Two-word verbs: put off, bring up
d. Subheadings, numbering, and bullet points
e. Asking questions
Four Features of an Academic Text
Objectivity
emphasis is given on the
informationandarguments that the author
wants to convey rather thanonpersonal
opinion.
giving rhetorical questions which marks
“closeness”with the reader is avoided.
Four Features of an Academic Text
Explicitness
An academic text is explicit about the relationships
inthetext.Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the writer in
English to make itclear to the reader how the various parts
of the text are related.
These connections can be made explicit by the use of
different signaling words or sign posts that allow the
readers to trace the relationships inthepartsof a study
Example of Signal Words
Four Features of an Academic Text
Accuracy
Academic writing uses vocabulary accurately. Most
subjectshavewords with narrow, specific meanings. Words
are clear and conciseandnot ambiguous. Awareness of the
words used is important becausewords that have almost the
same denotation (dictionary meaning) canhave very
different connotations (implied meanings). Likewise,
grammarrules are also followed to avoid confusion among
readers.
Four Features of an Academic Text
Accuracy
The use of jargons or language specific to a particular sub-
groupofpeople represents the specific language and
meaning assigned towords and phrases specific to a
discipline or area of study.
It is important that specialist terminology must be
usedaccuratelyand applied under the appropriate
conditions.
