EARTH SCIENCE Branch of Science that deals with the physical, chemical and biological complex constitutions and synergistic linkages of Earth’s atmosphere, and geosphere. 11-STEM

CHARACTERISTICS OF EARTH THAT SUPPORT LIFE AND EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS EARTH 3 rd planet in the solar system temperature range of -15ºC to 115ºC.

LAYERS OF THE EARTH CRUST outermost layer of Earth divided into older, thicker continental crust and younger, denser oceanic crust. MANTLE 2,900km thick makes up nearly 80% of the Earth’s total volume made up of magma and rock. CORE innermost part of the earth COMPOSED inner core which is at the center of the earth is made of iron outer core which surrounds the inner core and is made of iron and magma.

Factors that enable life to exist on Earth 1. Presence of liquid water ➢ Organisms mostly need water ➢ Nutrients need to be dissolved in water to be used ➢ Most chemical activities occur in water 2. Atmosphere maintained the temperature and gases necessary for our survival and sustenance 3. Sun All energy comes from the sun. Animals use oxygen to carry out the process of respiration to make energy. Plants use carbon dioxide to carry out the process of photosynthesis to make energy from sunlight.

What are the subsystems of the Earth? Lithosphere “land ” Hydrosphere “water ” Biosphere “living things ” Atmosphere “air”

SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH 1. Lithosphere “land ” rocky outer layer of the Earth CONSIST OF the crust and the solid outer most layer of the upper mantle extends to a depth of about 60 miles (100 km)

SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH 2. Hydrosphere “water ” total amount of water in a planet a planet’s hydrosphere can be liquid, vapor , or ice On Earth, liquid water exists on the surface in the form of oceans, lakes, and rivers and below the ground- as groundwater, in well and aquifers . Water vapor is most visible as clouds and fog . frozen part of is made of ice: glaciers, ice caps and icebergs ( cryosphere )

SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH 3. Biosphere “living things ” includes all the microorganisms, plants, and animals of Earth . living things form ecological communities based on the physical surroundings of an area which referred as the biomes(Deserts, grasslands, and tropical rainforests)

SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH 4. Atmosphere “air ” One half lies below an altitude of 5.6km, 90% occurs within 16km of the Earth’s surface . This thin blanket of air provides us with air that we breathe . protects us from the sun’s dangerous ultraviolet radiation

ATMOSPHERE 1. Exosphere Outermost/uppermost layer of the atmosphere Where spaceships orbits 2. Thermosphere Absorbs the sun’s radiation and the hottest layer of the earth Where satellite orbits the earth 3. Mesosphere Coldest temperature 4. Stratosphere Where we find the ozone layer which protects us from UV rays 5. Troposphere Where clouds and weather occurs
