Earthquake

Earthquake Earthquake is also known as quake, tremor or temblor is the phenomenon where there is sudden release of extreme energy from the earth’s crust resulting in shaking and displacement of the ground along with the creation of seismic waves.

Two types of Scales Richter Scale: Magnitude - measures the energy release by fault movement. Mercalli Scale:Intensity - measures the destructive effect. - Surface substrate: can magnify shock waves

Why do Earthquake occur?

Geologic Faults Plates Volcanic Eruptions Mine Blasts Nuclear Test Because of…..

A fault is a planar fracture or discontinuity in a volume of rock, across which there has been significant displacement . Geologic Fault

. Types of Fault

A normal fault occurs when the crust is extended. The hanging wall moves downward relative to the footwall. Normal Fault

A thrust fault occurs when the crust is compressed. The hanging wall moves upward relative to the footwall . Thrust or Reverse Fault

The fault surface is usually near vertical and motion results from shearing forces. Strike-Slip Fault

T he theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into large slabs of solid rock, called “plates,” that glide over Earth's mantle, the rocky inner layer above Earth’s core . Plate Tectonics

Earth’s solid outer layer, which includes the crust and the uppermost mantle, is called lithospehere . Plate Tectonics

Below the lithosphere is the asthenosphere ,a viscous layer kept malleable by heat deep within the  E arth (opens in new tab). It lubricates the undersides of Earth's tectonic plates, allowing the lithosphere to move around.  Plate Tectonics

Types of Plate Tectonics Divergent : extensional; the plates move apart. Spreading ridges, basin-range Convergent : compressional; plates move toward each other. Includes: Subduction zones and mountain building. Transform : shearing; plates slide past each other. Strike-slip motion.
