A moderate earthquake struck western Maharashtra as well as adjoining areas of Goa and northern Karnataka on the afternoon of 14 March 2005. It lasted nearly 30-seconds. It had a magnitude of ML=5.1. It caused damage in the Chandoli-Koyna-Warna region and resulted in at least 46 minor injuries. The earthquake was centred 9.5 kms ENE of Gothne (Maharashtra), India, 15.9 kms E of Sangammeswar (Maharashtra), India, 30.5 kms SSW of Koynanagar (Maharashtra), India, 45.3 kms ENE of Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), India, 46.5 kms SSE of Chiplun (Maharashtra), India, 54.9 kms WSW of Karad (Maharashtra), India,

68.1 kms SW of Satara (Maharashtra), India. 73.8 kms NW of Kolhapur (Maharashtra), India. 156 kms S of MG Road, Pune (Maharashtra), India. At least 46 people were injured in various quake-related incidents in the districts of Kolhapur, Ratnagiri , Sangli and Satara districts. 25-30 pupils at a school in Kolhapur city were injured as they attempted to rush out of the only exit of the building. 120 wall collapses were reported from the Dhebewadi region and nearly 583 houses were damaged. 10 wall collapses were reported from Patan and 100 houses were damaged while in the Marli area 50 wall collapses were reported and 133 houses were damaged. In the Koyna area, 20 wall collapses were reported and 105 houses were damaged. A fort in the Patan area was also slightly damaged.  Many buildings were damaged at Dhebewadi , Kasani , Kokrud , Madgyal , Warnawati and Umdi .

Buildings also developed cracks at Patan and in many parts of Satara district. Strong tremors were also experienced in many parts of Kolhapur, Ratnagiri , Satara and Sindudurg districts. In Kolhapur, apart from the above mentioned incident the earthquake resulted in formation of cracks in some buildings. Trains running on the Konkan Railway in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts were either halted or proceeded at reduced speeds. It was also felt strongly at Karad , Mahad , Mahabaleshwar , Phaltan and Poladpur . The quake was strongly felt throughout the Pune metropolitan area. Some buildings in Bibewadi and Hadapsar developed cracks; those at the latter were vacated. Old cracks were also widened in a high-rise building in Camp. A few high-rise office buildings were evacuated on Dhole Patil Road and on Airport Road. In the Mumbai metropolitan area, the earthquake was widely felt, mainly in the upper floors of buildings. Sections of two dilapidated buildings in the premises of the Gowalia Tank Fire Station compound collapsed without resulting in any injuries. At Nariman Point and Prabhadevi , many high-rise office buildings were evacuated.

The earthquake was also felt in other parts of Maharashtra at Ahmednagar , Barshi , Dehu Road, Karmala , Latur , Lonavala , Mohol , Pandharpur , Sangola , Solapur , Talegaon Dhabade and Uran . In the neighbouring state of Karnataka, strong tremors were experienced at at Bagalkot , Belagaavi , Bijapur , Dharwad , Hubballi , Kalbargi , Karwar , Nipani and Sankeshwar . A second earthquake struck at 07:37 AM IST on 15 March, within 24-hours of the first tremor. This earthquake had a magnitude of Mb=4.3 (USGS) and was centred to the east of the first event, 8.0 kms NW of Arla (Maharashtra), India, 9.3 kms SSE of Nigde (Maharashtra), India, 17.9 kms NNE of Chandoli (Maharashtra), India, 29.9 kms SSE of Helwak (Maharashtra), India, 37.9 kms WSW of Karad (Maharashtra), India,

56.6 kms SE of Chiplun (Maharashtra), India, 60.1 kms NW of Kolhapur (Maharashtra), India, 91.3 kms SSE of Mahabaleshwar (Maharashtra), India, 155 kms S of MG Road, Pune (Maharashtra), India, 156 kms NNW of Belagaavi (Maharashtra), India, 229 kms SSE of Churchgate , Mumbai (Maharashtra), India. This earthquake caused additional damage to weakened structures at Dhebewadi . This quake was felt throughout the Warna-Koyna region as well as at Chiplun , Kolhapur, Mahabaleshwar , Narwad and Satara . People in high-rise buildings in Pune also felt mild tremors.
