ED 710 ADVANCED EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY Dr. Jana Gloria Almerino Graduate School Professor Presented by: Amapola M. Curayag MAVED

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this lecture, students will be able to: Define what is evidence-based intervention and cognitive behavioral intervention and their differences; When to apply evidence-based intervention and cognitive intervention in teaching and learning process; Learn the different response to intervention (RTI) models Assess yourselves using evidence-based and cognitive behavioural intervention

Dr. David Sackett – an American – Canadian medical doctor pioneered evidence-based medicine defines it as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient.  It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.”

EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTION/PRACTICE (EBP) Are practices or programs that have peer – viewed, documented empirical evidence of effectiveness Programs , policies, processes, policies, and guidelines that have been proven efficacy or effectiveness in a population or setting. E ffective in targeting behavior problems if implemented with integrity.

WORK-BASED RESEARCH TRIAL AND ERROR TESTING FOUR SOURCES OF EVIDENCES OF EBP Research evidence PEER – VIEWED RESEARCH FEEDBACK From organization/customers, Clients, stakeholders PRACTIONER EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE

RESEARCH – EVIDENCE BASED ( TALKING THERAPY) To know which psychological therapies and other intervention are most likely to be effective Evidence – based practice intervention EBP PATIENT CHOICE STANDARDIZED APPROACHES TO PSCYHOLOGICAL PRACTICE People are involved in decision have their full consent CLINICAL EXPERTISE (GUIDANCE THAT RECOMMENDS PARTICULAR INTERVENTION Clinicians need to use their expertise to make sure which approaches are effective.

PRIMARY SOURCE Original research study SECONDARY SOURCE Contrast to primary sources

Evidence-based medicine consists of five explicit steps, (Reynolds, 2000). A specific questions Finding the Best Evidence Evaluating the Validity and Usefulness Applying the Practice Evaluating the Practice

T - time of Intervention T – type of question or study

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION/THERAPHY (CBT) Definition CBT is a process of teaching, coaching and reinforcing positive behaviors. Helps people identify cognitive patterns or thought and emotions that are linked with behaviors. CBT is a practical, short – term form of psychotherapy (talk therapy) It helps people to develop skills and strategies for becoming and staying healthy mentally. Focuses on the here-and-now on the problems that come up in day – to day life.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND ALBERT ELLIS, PhD – grandfather of CBT – published “Reason and Emotion in Psychotherapy in 1962 Cognitive behavioral therapy was invented by a psychiatrist, AARON T. BECK , MD – wrote “Self Concept in Depression with D. Stein in 1960 Beck realized that the link between thoughts and feelings was very important CBT is a structured talk therapy emphasizes the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do.

COMBINATION OF TWO THERAPIES Cognitive therapy and Behavior Therapy The basis of both techniques is that healthy thought leads to healthy feelings and behaviors. COGNITIVE THERAPY Aims to change the way the person thinks on a certain issue causing concern. Negative thoughts cause self destructive feelings and behaviors

COMBINATION OF TWO THERAPIES Cognitive therapy and Behavior Therapy Behavior Therapy Aims to teach the person techniques or skills to alter their behavior Teaches a person more helpful behaviors

COGNITIVE THERAPY BEHAVIORAL THERAPY Focuses on identifying and changing distorted thinking that maintains condition Provides strategies and skills to modify behavior COMPARISON

COGNITIVE THOUGHT TRIANGLE Variation of terms: CBT TRIAD, CBT TRIANGLE, CBT MODEL CBT – is used by therapists and other mental health professionals to help people with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and those who are under a lot of stress lately.

STEPS IN CBT Step 1: Identify negative or inaccurate thinking Step 2: Reshape negative or inaccurate thinking

FEELING I feel low/depressed Thoughts I’ve let everyone down They’ll be angry with me I’m not a god friend Thoughts I can’t do this What is wrong with me Everyone is looking at me Behaviors Withdraw from others Avoid Friends Behavior Get away from the situation Avoid it in the future FEELING I feel anxious

When CBT is used Treat mental illness when medication aren’t a good option Learn techniques for coping with stressful life situations Identify ways to manage emotions Prevent a relapse of mental illness symptoms Resolve relationship conflicts and learn better ways to communicate Cope with grief or loss Overcome emotional trauma (violence or abuse) TREAT: Mental health disorders that may improve with CBT includes: Sleep disorders, sexual disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, phobias, Obsessive – compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, substance u se disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD

RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION (RTI) MODELS Response to Intervention ( RTI) is an approach that schools use to help all students, including struggling learners . It gives students opportunities to learn and work at their grade level. IDEA IS TO “HELP ALL STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL”

Here goes your map title. RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION - is an on going, proactive educational measure that identifies student’s needs in the classroom setting, examines data and adjusts programming accordingly with a three- tier response in order to support students and promote educational success.

Why are intervention strategies in schools important? School interventions are crucial for promoting success, well-being, and unlocking the full potential of all pupils. Interventions aim to boost academic performance and enhance valuable social and emotional skills through: Tutoring Mentoring Counselling Specialised programmes

SUMMARY EVIDENCE – BASED INTERVENTION/PRACTICE - used for getting the evidence of the effective medication or intervention COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION/THERAPY - Correcting or Replacing a negative thought into positive though or action RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION (RTI) - To help students who are falling behind the class and to apply what effective intervention first them best

TASK: C REATE A RESEARCH QUESTION BASED ON PICO FORMULA What affect will the campus smoking ban have on students who smoke?
