Research-based Solutions
Results for the students we serve

1992 EdisonLearning is founded as “The Edison Project.”
1995 The first four EdisonLearning schools open their doors, using a
research-based approach to create an innovative school design.
1999 Launch of the EdisonLearning Benchmarks in all partnership
schools, the pioneering formative assessment system written to
state standards.
2000 The first Summer Journey™ summer school opens, followed in
2001 with the launch of Learning Force™ standards-based
tutoring.
2001 EdisonLearning begins a partnership with the School District of
Philadelphia in what has become a prominent model for major
urban school reform.
2004 The first full-scale EdisonLearning Alliance™ program is
launched. Alliance boosts learning in low-performing schools by
working within the existing school structure.
Nearly Two Decades of Driving Student Achievement
2008 EdisonLearning replaces “Edison Schools” as the company
name. This re-branding reflects the company’s transformation.
With the acquisition of the education software company Provost
Systems, EdisonLearning combines its experience and core
competencies in teaching and learning with a fully integrated
online solution that achieves universal student access to an
individualized learning experience.
2009 EdisonLearning opens its first fully online public charter high
school – Provost Academy™ South Carolina.
2010 EdisonLearning opens its second fully online public charter high
school – Provost Academy Colorado.
EdisonLearning launches eValuate™, an enhanced Benchmark
Assessment System which leverages innovative technologies in
data collection and analysis to drive formative assessment.

School Designs is…
Comprehensive
A meticulous educational approach is complemented by strategic involvement of family and
community.
Flexible
There’s no one thing that makes a school truly superior. It is a complex equation of many factors that,
when they rely on each other, create a seamless formula for success.
Tested
Since our first schools opened in 1995, EdisonLearning School Designs has had the privilege to work
successfully with district and charter partners in over two hundred schools nationwide.
Innovative
EdisonLearning uses educational technology to perform two critical tasks:
1.to better prepare students for life in a tech-based society and global workforce.
2.to better customize instruction to meet the needs and interests of all students.

Unique School Structure
Academy
Grade level groupings create a “schools within a schools.”
•Each Academy runs for either two or three years
•Each Academy is further divided into cohesive student/teacher groups called Houses.
Houses
Houses are led by a small group of teachers knows as House Teams.
•Each House has a group of teachers who are responsible for a select group of students.
•Teachers stay with the same group of students throughout each multi-year Academy.

There is a positive correlation between parent satisfaction and student achievement.
According to a recent U.S. Department of Education
report, "thirty years of research shows that greater
family involvement in children's learning is a critical
link to achieving a high-quality education and a safe
disciplined learning environment for every student.”

“Together, the resources and accountability
systems that constitute [EdisonLearning’s]
design represent a coherent, comprehensive,
and ambitious strategy to address key elements
relevant to providing high-quality education.”
“[The solution’s] well-developed information
systems and focus on achievement-based
accountability should make it especially well-
suited to the high-stakes testing environment of
No Child Left Behind (NCLB).”
“[EdisonLearning] has devised a range of
strategies to promote in its teachers and
principals not only the capacity to deliver high-
quality instruction, but also the motivation and
opportunity to do so.”
The RAND Corporation analyzed and validated
EdisonLearning’s approach to school design
and student performance over 6 years and
recorded significant gains.
Notably, RAND foresaw the importance of

EdisonLearning in Action

Partnership Profile
San Jose-Edison Academy
Since its inception, San Jose-Edison Academy has
shown steady improvement in school wide proficiency in
Math and English Language Arts.
In 2010, approximately 80% of students were
proficient in Math, almost double from 2002 when
proficiency levels were at 41.8%. 78% of students
are proficient in English Language Arts in 2010, up
from 42% in 2002.
We won’t stop looking for ways to improve our
school until we are at 100% proficiency.
With EdisonLearning, we have a strong partner to
support us in taking our craft to the next level to
benefit all students.”

Partnership Profile
Lincoln Charter School
In 1999, the School District of the City of York in Pennsylvania was struggling with student achievement.
Schools were not performing well, with students at Lincoln Elementary schools performing at the lowest level in the
district. The superintendent, with the support of a group of parents and teachers from Lincoln Elementary School,
sought a new approach to help improve the school.
Lincoln Charter School consistently outperforms the other elementary schools in the York City School
District. From 2002 to 2009, PSSA Reading scores have risen by 25.2 points at Lincoln Charter
School, as compared to other schools that have risen on average 14 points. In Math, the point gains
are 29.2 points for Lincoln Charter School, as compared to 23 points for other schools in the district.

Partnership Profile
Las Vegas
The Clark County School District (CCSD) is the 5th
largest school district in the country, serving nearly
300,000 students. In 2001, Superintendent Carlos
Garcia sought a breakthrough program that would help
the district’s lowest performing schools increase student
achievement.
EdisonLearning was selected to partner with six of
the district’s lowest performing schools. These
schools had a high number of Limited English
Proficiency (LEP), as well as a large percentage of
Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) students.
From the time our partnership began, students
at EdisonLearning Partnership Schools have
shown increased achievement in the areas of
Reading and Math.
In addition, length of partnership has a direct
and positive impact on student achievement.
“In 2001 we were struggling academically.
Achieving at only 20%, Park was the lowest
performing school in the district.
Teachers lacked direction and the school needed
greater continuity in its curriculum.”

Serving the LEP and FRL Populations
Las Vegas
CCSD has 21 Empowerment elementary schools in
the district. Empowerment schools are given greater
autonomy and accountability to increase student
achievement. They evolved from the belief that, if
schools are to be held accountable for student
achievement, they should be given the freedom to
determine what will best accomplish their goals .
EdisonLearning Partnership Schools are similar to
Empowerment Schools in that both are given the
autonomy to determine how to best accomplish
their goals. The two types of schools are different,
however, in the make-up of their student
populations. EdisonLearning Partnership Schools have
significantly larger LEP and FRL populations.
Students attending EdisonLearning Partnership
Schools show a higher rate of gain on Nevada
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs). Even with
the added challenges these groups encounter,
such as mastery of a new language in the case
of LEP students, these schools have been able
to close the achievement gap.

able to perform at the level we’re performing right now.”
- Lorna James-Cervantes, Principal
Park-Edison Elementary, Las Vegas NV
“EdisonLearning’s high expectations for student learning, relentless commitment to
building local capacity for improving classroom instruction, and the outstanding
customer service provided by both the Hawaii-based and Headquarters teams continue
