SHERYL D. PADILLA DAINA S. TAN

WHAT IS AN EDITORIAL? Article that explicitly states the paper’s stand on pressing issues and concerns. Normally printed in the Opinion/Editorial (Op-ed) pages and laid out near the staffbox. Unlike other journalistic outputs, editorials do not have any byline or tagline. Different from Editor’s Note which is an open letter addressed to the readers. It may also be an introduction to the contents of the publication.

OBJECTIVES OF AN EDITORIAL (1) To analyze pressing issues in order to: simplify the issue in a manner that is better understood clarify/correct misconceptions take sides on an issue (e.g. attack, defend, endorse, compliment) mobilize the readers to action To strengthen the media’s role as social critic. To either react or raise issues that must be made known to the public.

OBJECTIVES OF AN EDITORIAL (2) In the context of campus journalism Editorials seek to reflect the paper’s pro-student orientation Editorials seek to provide analysis of issues from the students’ point of view Editorials seek to discuss both national and local/campus concerns Assumes that local/campus concerns are part of the overall national concerns National concerns are discussed in the context of local concerns

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD EDITORIAL Objective , not subjective Clear , not vague Simplified , not simplistic Based on facts , not hearsay

SOURCES OF EDITORIAL TOPICS News. Research. Special occasions

KINDS OF EDITORIAL Editorial of information. It presents only the information about a particular issue. Editorial of interpretation. Though it also gives information, its primary aim is to interpret or analyze the event, situation or issue to present the facts in a more meaningful and enlightening perspective to the reader. Editorial of argumentation. It also gives information and interpretation. Its difference, however, lies on the fact that it takes a stand on a controversial issue and gives its reasons in a logical way to convince the reader to side with the newspaper principles.

KINDS OF EDITORIAL Editorial of criticism. It is similar to editorial of argumentation, but this editorial tries to present both sides of the issue or the pros and cons of the situation, though the newspaper has its own side of the issue. Editorial of Persuasion. This aims to persuade readers to support a program or a plan of action by enumerating the advantages to be gained. Editorial of commendation. It usually commends, praises or pays tribute for the successes, achievements of public figures like heroes, leaders and other celebrities. Editorial of celebrating special occasion. It highlights the significance of celebrating special occasions like Independence Day. All Saints day, Christmas and New Year.

BASIC STRUCTURE OF AN EDITORIAL Title – gives a gist of the topic Introduction – one-liner, gist of argument (should catch readers’ attention) Analysis – clear presentation of arguments supporting the stand reflected in the introduction Conclusion – summing up; must include specific calls to action whenever possible

TIPS IN WRITING EDITORIALS Know your target audience; Write in a manner that is understandable to your defined target audience. Gather as much data as you can on the issue. Know all arguments for or against the issue. Analyze and take a stand on the issue based on the given facts. Give statistics, if possible; Attribute authority to support your facts and arguments.

TIPS IN WRITING EDITORIALS Use formal language in presenting opinion; Be impersonal. Use the third person “we” instead of “I” except in direct quotation. Be authoritative, but do not preach. Be sure that the topic is of interest to the reader. Prefer current and controversial issue. Use sound and logical reasoning. Be brief; Limit your article to only one aspect of your chosen subject.

TIPS IN WRITING EDITORIALS Do not use first person and second person (I, me, you, kami, ikaw , ako , etc.) Do not use words that are not sure of its consequences (maybe, perhaps, baka , raw, daw , etc.) Focus on giving OPINIONS rather than giving information. Always support your opinions with facts/evidences. Use transitional devices (furthermore, moreover, hence, subalit , sa kabilang dako , in addition to, etc.)

SAMPLES OF EDITORIAL Modernisasyon ng PCG, kailangan na ( Pilipino Star Ngayon, February 27, 2023 ) Haywire messaging ( Philippine Daily Inquirer , 10August 2021) Is There a Santa Claus? ( The Sun , 21 September 1897)

Haywire messaging ( Philippine Daily Inquirer , 10 August 2021) (first four paragraphs) Heartbreaking scenes of people swarming vaccination sites in the cities of Manila, Las Piñas, and Antipolo in the wee hours of Aug. 5 gave end-of-the-world feels on the eve of the ECQ lockdown for Metro Manila. The Manila information office said police gave these estimates of crowds that trooped to four vaccination sites at around 2 a.m. on Thursday: SM San Lazaro, 7,000 to 10,000; SM Manila, 5,000; Lucky Chinatown, 3,000; Robinsons Manila, 4,000. these crowds were “unusually high”, said the city information office, as the regular number of people queuing for vaccination ranged from 1,000 to 2,000 only. In Las Piñas, kilometers-long lines of people were reported as early as Wednesday. An ABS-CBN video showed people running toward SM Southmall at 2 a.m., and another video showed crowds rushing to the Las Piñas Doctors Hospital as it opened for vaccination at 7 a.m. Long lines of people were also seen outside a mall in Antipolo City in Rizal on Thursday morning. Vaccine hesitancy? These multitudes clearly belied the governments’ regular complaint about the refusal of ordinary citizens to get jabbed with COVID-19 vaccines.

Is There a Santa Claus? (excerpts) Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

CONCLUDING REMARKS Journalism does not just answer the 5Ws and 1H; it also seeks to answer two other questions: So what? (analysis of issues based on facts) What now? (recommendations) Having an opinion is good; having an opinion based on reliable information is best. While all of us are entitled to an opinion, there are opinions that weigh more than others, based on factual and contextual accuracy.
