Education and justice – a tutoring perspective

Intersections between education and justice (focusing specifically, at this early stage, on the roles tutoring can play in advancing justice) **********   Assessing education needs among population groups in a city (especially among the underprivileged), advocating for funding for those groups, and arranging for tutoring services to be made available, as appropriate Arranging for opportunities for youth to contribute constructively to their community, in both paid and unpaid positions, and in collaboration with their peers Using available demographic information, and finding new demographic information where necessary, to identify injustices in education service provision in the Ottawa community, and devising plans to deliver educational services, as appropriate Researching money and education in Ottawa: who has money, how much do they have, and from where – and how is the money spent? Determining effective measures of learning success Liaising with stakeholders at community centres in Ottawa to craft more effective models for tutoring service provision (cf. Sophie Maranda’s comments about the shortcomings of the Boys and Girls Club’s model of tutoring, and the tutoring-as-babysitting problem) Making the case for public funding for tutoring service provision with the City of Ottawa and with related public-good stakeholders Identifying situations of persistent, seemingly intractable conflict, and creating fora where such conflict can be defused, and dialogue established (conflict impedes learning) Creating written and multimedia publications to highlight issues in education in Ottawa       Longer-term visions   Creating a legal space for an “Uber of tutoring” (there must be justice for three participants: clients, tutors, and tutor aggregating companies like Gemstone Learning) Creating a province-wide regulation organization for tutors (on a par with the Ontario College of Teachers)
