About This Presentation

Magnesium sulphate is a bronchodilator that relaxes bronchial muscles and expands airways, reducing asthma symptoms like shortness of breath. Doctors primarily use it to treat severe asthma flare-ups. This presentation is an overview on the "Effect of magnesium sulphate in the treatment of asth...

EFFECT OF MAGNESIUM SULPHATE IN THE TREATMENT OF ASTHMA

Inhaled magnesium sulfate in the treatment of acute asthma Powell C, Dwan K, Milan SJ, Beasley R, Hughes R, Knopp-Sihota JA, Rowe BH Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2012, Issue 12. Art. No.: CD003898. DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD003898.pub5.

Comparison 3 :MgSO4 and SABA and ipratropium versus placebo (saline) and SABA and ipratropium , Outcome 1 Pulmonary function (FEV1).

The review found that using inhaled magnesium sulfate combined with a beta-2-agonist (with or without ipratropium ) for an acute asthma attack does not significantly improve pulmonary function (and therefore does not help people to breathe more freely) overall, but there may be improvement in adults with particularly severe asthma attacks, which merits further study. The evidence, however, that the addition of nebulised magnesium sulfate is helpful with regard to clinically important outcomes, such as reducing hospital admissions, is not proven by the clinical trials included in the review.

Magnesium sulfate for treating exacerbations of acute asthma in the emergency department Rowe BH, Bretzlaff J, Bourdon C, Bota G, Blitz S, Camargo CA Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2000, Issue 1. Art. No.: CD001490. DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD001490.

Comparison 1: Intravenous MgSO4 vs placebo, Outcome 2 Pulmonary function testing.

Comparison 2 :Intravenous MgSO4 vs Placebo (Severe Asthma subgroup), Outcome 1 Pulmonary function testing.

The review of trials found that intravenous magnesium sulfate in addition to bronchodilators seems to be safe and beneficial for people with severe asthma attacks, or those for whom bronchodilators are not working . Hence intravenous Magnesium sulphate and not inhaled magnesium sulphate is recommended in the treatment of acute asthma.
