RA NO. 8749 KEY OBJECTIVES:
The overall goal of Republic Act No. 8749 is to protect and improve the
quality of the country's air. This law aims to ensure a healthy and safe
environment for the Filipino people, which can be achieved through:
Setting air quality standards and guidelines for ambient air, motor vehicle
emissions, and industrial emissions.
Promoting public awareness on air quality and the health impacts of air
pollution.
Promoting policies that support both economic growth and environmental
protection.
Strengthening air quality monitoring systems and enforcing penalties for
non-compliance with air quality standards.
BRIEF OVERVIEW:
CHAPTER 1
Defines the terms,
principles, policies, rights,
and responsibilities of air
quality management and
protection in the
Philippines.
The Air Quality Management
System (Chapter 2) defines
the structure, strategies,
standards, techniques, and
funding for monitoring,
regulating, and improving
the country's ambient air
quality.
CHAPTER 2 CHAPTER 3
Sets the specifications,
standards, and
prohibitions for fuels,
additives, substances, and
pollutants that may have
an impact on air quality.
CHAPTER 4
The Department of
Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR) shall be
the lead agency for
administering and
enforcing the Air Quality
Act.
CHAPTER 5 and CHAPTER 6
Provide for the procedures, remedies, and sanctions for
violations of the Act, and mandates the conduct of
environmental education, information, and public
awareness campaigns on air quality issues and solutions.
BENEFITS
OF RA NO.
8749:
PUBLIC HEALTH
This Act helps minimize the prevalence of illnesses
like asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, and heart disease.
Additionally, it lessens the amount of hazardous
contaminants that vulnerable groups with underlying
medical issues are exposed to.
ENVIRONMENT
Reduced air pollution helps safeguard ecosystems,
such as forests, waterways, and agricultural land, which
can be adversely affected by pollutants including sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Moreover, this Act
promotes the decrease of greenhouse gas emissions
that fuel global warming.
QUALITY OF LIFE
The improvement in air quality is among the most
immediate advantages of this. Clean air contributes
directly to a better quality of life, increasing comfort,
productivity, and overall well-being. Communities
residing in regions with lower pollution levels are less
likely to have pollution-related illnesses, making their
living conditions safer and healthier.
