Effective use of TLM in teaching – learning process
CONTENT 1 Teaching and learning materials (TLM) 2 3 4 ICT as a TLM Difference between teaching aids and teaching and learning materials Types of Teaching-Learning material
TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIAL (TLM) Definition : Teaching-Learning Materials (TLMs) are the tools that are used by teachers and instructors within schools to facilitate learning and understanding of concepts aamong students And to support the learning objectives, as set out within the lesson plans. The teaching-learning materials provide a range of experiences to the learners. When they are used in an adequate manner, then they are used to motivate learners towards acquisition of education. To enrich the system of education and to enable the individuals to achieve a academic goals, it is essential to implement effective teaching-learning materials. It is essential for the educators to possess adequate knowledge and information regarding the use of TLMs.
Significance of Teaching-Learning Materials The major significance of teaching-learning materials is recognized within the classroom environment by providing support and assistance to the educators with the presentation and transmission of educational content and the achievement of educational objectives. The primary objective of teaching-learning materials is to motivate student towards acquisition of education. These are primarily used by teachers to provide assistance and support to the learners to achieve academic outcomes. The significance of teaching-learning materials is usually recognized in terms of following aspects. These are, student motivation, developing creativity, evoking prior knowledge, encouraging the processes of interpreting, understanding, organizing and amalgamating the content, logical thinking, reasoning, communication and contributing to the development of different skills, values and attitudes .
Objectives of Teaching-Learning Materials The major objectives have been stated as follows: Motivate Learners Development of Knowledge and Skills among Teachers Help in Longer Retention of Information Facilitate Holistic Learning Help in Organizing Classroom Teaching Promoting Effective Communication Facilitating Change in Attitudes Practical Applications Making Learning Pleasurable Concept Formation
Edgar Dale’s cone of experience Teaching learning materials are of various types and thus are classified an categorized d in several ways. Edgar Dale’s cone of experience is one of the simples ways of categorizing TLMs. He experimented with different TLMs and categorized them on basis of type of experiences the learner acquires – fro concrete e to abstract . Teaching learning materials provide a range of learning experiences to learnersFrom direct to indirect. Edgar Dale (1969) arranged the learning experiences on a continum of ‘directness to indirectness’ which has correlation with continuum Of ‘concreteness to abstract’. He called it a ‘Cone of Experiences’. Therefore, learning outcomes are highly dependent on the learning experience Given in classroom using teaching learning materials.

Types of Teaching Learning Materials TLMs can broadly be classified into th es e categories : Text Books Maps Charts Poster Models Overhead Projector (OHP) PowerPoint Slides Audio Materials Audio Visual Medium
CATEGORIES TLMs can broadly be classified into three categories. i) Audio TLMs ii) Visual TLMs iii) Audio Visual TLMs Let us look: into these categories in details. i) Audio TLMs: These TLMs primarily stimulate the hearing sense of learner. It includes – human voice, telephonic conversation, audio discs or tapes, gramophone records, Radio broadcast.
Con..... ii) Visual TLMs: These types of TLMs involve the sense of vision. They stimulate the visual impulses. These can be of various types as given below: • Visual (Verbal) Print. (the text is the main instructional or teaching learning aid) • Textbook, Supplementary book. • Reference books, encyclopedia, etc. • Magazine, Newspaper • Documents and Clippings • Duplicated written material • Programmed material or SLM • Case Studies/Reports etc. • Visual (Pictorial- Non Projected ) Example of TLM (video)
Con....... iii) Audio Visual TLMs are the projected aids, which use both auditory and visual senses to enhance learning. The greatest advantage of these is they are the closest representation of reality. These include – Motion Picture Film, Television, Video discs/cassettes, slide – tape presentations, Multimedia Computer.
Difference between teaching aids and teaching learning materials TEACHING AIDS Teaching learning materials A teaching aid is a tool or technique that is used to support teaching Teaching materials are the materials that have the actual target in lesson They are various devices the facilitator may use to present teaching materials to the learners They are the physical resources that facilitator use to assist learners in achieving the set learning outcomes Teaching aids coveres the broad range that is, Laptop, projector, White board, interactive board, etc. Teaching materials coveres the broad range that is, visual, auditory, audio visual, graphics, software etc. If a teacher use doc camera projector to project text bok, here doc camera is the teaching aid If a teacher use doc camera projector to project text bok, here text boom is the teaching Material.
The Importance of ICT in Education ICT Enhance E-learning and Online Learning ICT brings inclusion ICT promotes higher-order thinking skills ICT enhances subject learning ICT use develops ICT literacy and ICT Capability ICT use encourages collaboration and motivates learning ICT in education improves engagement and knowledge retention ICT use allows for effective Differentiation Instruction with technology ICT integration is a key part of the national curriculum Improve attainment levels – ICT can help achieve higher standards of learning.
Here, in this video we can see that a Teacher is asking questions to the students and the students find difficult to answer due to lack of understanding about the concept. The Teacher finds difficult to makes students to understand the abstract concepts. IMPORTANCE OF TLM’S Video :
Here in this video, the teacher is explaining about some variety of plants (imaginary play) without Teaching it in-class with lecture method, she makes the students to visit the place and learn about it by themselves with help of the plant. Here plant acts as a TLM. It makes Teaching and learning process more easier. IMPORTANCE OF TLM’S Video :
IMPORTANCE OF TLM’S It makes lesson interesting and learning easier. Long retention of memory. It facilitates both Teacher and learner. It makes Teaching and learning process more easier. It gives Access to real life situation. It provides a bridge between concrete and abstractness of concept. Field trip and virtual field trips acts as an effective TLM. It is cheap an best way to promote learning and Easy to use. Enables everyone for active participation. It offers wide range of scope of learning experience. Effective in achieving learning objectives. It helps in adapting different strategies.
