Kate Chopin s work, The Awakening, and Henrik Ibsen s play, A Doll s House, were
written at a time when men dominated women in every aspect of life. Edna
Pontellier, the protagonist in The Awakening, and Nora, the protagonist in A Doll s
House, are trapped in a world dominated by men. The assumed superiority of their
husbands traps them in their households. Edna and Nora share many similarities, yet

Rowlandson is a primary example of the sectionalism of Puritans, and more
specifically, Puritan women. Rowlandson recounts the attack on her home by the
Wampanoag tribe as well as the aftermath of her eventual capture. Being certain to

record of her travels with her captors as well as preserved her own womanhood from

This restriction of interests is clearly displayed in the captivity narrative of Mrs.
Rowlandson. One example of this is her specific detail regarding her sleeping
situation and detailing of anything involving her body or emotion. As mentioned
above, Puritans placed a great deal of emphasis on the chastity of a woman,
meaning that Rowlandson was compelled to record everything that happened to
her in order to protect herself and her chastity by including her womanly feelings
such as her grief from having her child killed and having to leave her family
behind. Another example of sectionalism within the narrative can be found in
Rowlandson s account of the specific locations that she traveled to and the culture
of the people that she was with. She frequently mentions locations of Indian towns
and the barbaric behavior of the people living in them in order to both provide
details concerning the land around her home and to create a significant divide

was able to display Puritan sectionalism by killing her captors and returning to her

exhibited by the natives, her actions were seen as justified and actually glorified by

Acts of kindness and charity make the world go round . As one person helps
another, a type of pay it forward phenomenon may occur. If this did happen, and
everyone who was helped gave up a little bit of their time to help another, many

participation is needed, overseers may lure contestants in with some sort of
inducement. Do people really deserve and often expect accolades for what they
have done? Even though some rewards in return for acts of charity are healthy in
moderation, frequent incentives would undermine the actual cause of helping
others. If every good deed had a small reward, opposition would be scarce.
However, if this reward would be used to boost students grades or give employees
raises, many would become skeptical. This is evident when students receive
enrichment points for participating and contributing to a charity drive for those
affected by natural disasters or other catastrophic events. When students know ahead
of time that they have an opportunity to increase their grade in a certain class, they
will most likely contribute as much as they can for free points. The careless donating
may seem impeccant and unimportant, but the points earned are enough to skew
student s grades as they fail to prove their knowledge and understanding of material.

Every single person has strength and a weakness too. Not a single person in this
