BASIC ELECTRICAL SYMBOLS

Slide Content

Electrical symbols

RESISTOR A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. In electronic circuits, resistors are used to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, to divide voltages, bias active elements, and terminate transmission lines, among other uses .

CAPASITOR A capacitor is a two-terminal electrical device that can store energy in the form of an electric charge. It consists of two electrical conductors that are separated by a distance. The space between the conductors may be filled by vacuum or with an insulating material known as a dielectric .

INDUCTOR An inductor, also called a coil, choke, or reactor, is a passive two-terminal electrical component that stores energy in a magnetic field when electric current flows through it. An inductor typically consists of an insulated wire wound into a coil .

BATTERY A  battery  is a device that converts chemical energy contained within its active materials directly into electric energy by means of an  electrochemical oxidation-reduction  (redox) reaction. This type of reaction involves the transfer of electrons from one material to another via an electric circuit .

SIMPLE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT

Electrical grounding is the process of directing excess electricity to the ground via a wire. Known as a grounding wire, it's an essential safety component in most electrical systems. The grounding wire will discharge excess electricity safely to the ground so that it doesn't cause injuries or fires

VOLTAGE SOURCES A voltage source is a two-terminal device which can maintain a fixed voltage. An ideal voltage source can maintain the fixed voltage independent of the load resistance or the output current. However, a real-world voltage source cannot supply unlimited current. A voltage source is the dual of a current source .

CURRENT SOURCE A current source is an electronic  circuit that delivers or absorbs an electric current which is independent  of the voltage across it .

SWITCH A switch is a simple device that is used to either break the electric circuit or to complete it

DIODE A diode is a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a one-way switch for current. It allows current to flow easily in one direction, but severely restricts current from flowing in the opposite direction .

LED  light-emitting  diode  (a  semiconductor  diode which  glows  when a voltage is applied). "light sources can be fluorescent tubes, optical fibers, or LEDs"

TRANSISTOR A transistor is a miniature semiconductor that regulates or controls current or voltage flow in addition amplifying and generating these electrical signals and acting as a switch/gate for them .
