DAY 1

Visual art like painting can reflect time, place, and experiences of man. It is helpful in understanding beliefs, practices and way of life, culture, national heritage, and traditions. Learning to read painting requires understanding of the elements and principles of art.
The elements of art are features that are used so that the artist can communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings to viewers. The following are the elements of art:
Provide students with small artworks (or sections of "Women Feeding Chickens") and ask them to identify and label the elements of art present.
DAY 2
Recall the elements of art discussed in the previous lesson.
What lines do you see? What shapes do you see? What colors do you see? Can you see some lightness and darkness of colors? 5. Can you describe the texture?
Introduce the principles of art: balance, movement, rhythm, pattern, contrast, unity, and emphasis. Define each principle with examples.
Activity 1: The Gecko and the Principles of Art Ask the pupils to share about beliefs regarding geckos. Distribute a copy of a drawing of gecko to the pupils. Instruct them to design the gecko with different lines and shapes. They can even color their design or add value and texture to it. Remind them to observe proper use of the principles of design like balance and pattern to make their work interesting. Display the pupils’ work and use it as examples in explaining the principles of art.
Activity 2: Art in Local Celebrations and Festivities a. Select a video on Philippine festivals. b. Ask the pupils if they are familiar with the festivals featured in the video. c. Ask pupils to talk about what the festival is about and when it is held. d. Have the pupils describe the color, lines, shape, and texture shown in the festivals. e. Let the pupils select one local festival to create a paper mask.
Activity 3: Festival Paper Mask Materials: pencil, scissors, cutter, paper plate, coloring materials (crayon, colored pens or pencils), objects that can be found in nature (leaves, thin branches, small pebbles or stone), glue, and rubber band or garter. Give the following procedure to the students: a. Draw the desired design that will best represent the festival that you want to feature. Make sure that you pay attention to your facial details like the position of the eyes and the mouth if making a full-face mask. b. Carefully cut the eye area and the mouth with a cutter. c. Cover your mask with your coloring materials. d. Decorate your mask with found objects that you have collected. e. Attach the rubber bonds of the garter.
Grade students’ gecko designs and festival masks based on their application of the principles of art.
