Embryology Mr. Virendra Shah Chief Embryologist & Lab Director Shelby Gada Life ART Center Pvt Ltd

Embryology (from Greek, embryon , "the unborn, embryo"; and, -logia ) is the branch of biology Embryology is the study of development of an embryo, from the stage of ovum fertilization through the fetal stage.

Inability to conceive after one year or more of unprotected intercourse

“ One in every four couples in developing countries had been found to be affected by infertility ,” -- WHO Human Reproduction Programme, 2017

In adequate hormone production Blockage of fallopian tubes Interaction of eggs and sperms affected. Inadequate sperm production

To by-pass any of the barriers to sperm-egg interaction.

Here, the eggs and sperms are made to interact outside the body and the resultant embryo formed is transferred to the uterus.

Overcoming barriers to Sperm – Egg interaction Cervical factor: Intrauterine Insemination Blocked Fallopian Tubes: IVF-ET Low or No Sperms: ICSI

1.Intrauterine insemination ( IUI ) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman's uterus to facilitate fertilization.

2. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a method of helping a woman to have a baby in which an egg is removed from her ovaries, fertilized outside her body, with (her husband) semen and then replaced in her womb.

3. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): A test-tube fertilization procedure in which a sperm is injected directly into an egg to achieve fertilization.

4. Semen Banking- Storage of semen and ovum at -196 °C in liquid nitrogen. Semen bank- Social and Commercial use

Sperm donation Egg donation Women with premature ovarian failure Poor response to ART Menopausal women Embryo Donation No genetic resemblance but carrying the pregnancy Surrogacy

5 million babies born worldwide 25% in the last 6 year 350,000 cycles per year > 200 0 clinics in India
