EMP Weapons An Emerging Technology By: Mohabbat Hussain M Asif Farooq PS-3,Gr-5

Contents Introduction – EMP Theoretical Background of EMP Effects of EMP EMP Types & E-Bomb Working of E-Bomb Defense against EMP Faraday Cage

Introduction Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a burst of electromagnetic from an explosion or a suddenly fluctuating magnetic field. It is the weapon of electrical mass distraction E-bombs(a future technology) can unleash as much electrical power as 2 billion watts or more in a flash. It can destroy power grids, electronic systems and communications equipments of a specific area. No known effects on living things/ humans

Theoretical Background Faradays Law of Induction “When a conductor comes across a changing magnetic field, current is induced in the conductor” Common examples: Motor, Fans, Generators, Transformers.. Stronger the magnetic field, larger the induced current.

Theoretical Background If the induced current is beyond the conductance capacity of conductor, it will fry the conductor.

Effects of EMP EMP weapon produces a pulse of energy that creates a powerful electromagnetic field. Short-circuiting a wide range of electronic equipment, particularly computers, satellites, radios, radar receivers and even civilian traffic lights. Since EMP is electromagnetic energy traveling at the speed of light, all of the vulnerable electronic equipment in the detonation zone could be affected simultaneously.

Effects of EMP

Effects of EMP EMP will paralyze: Military and civilian Communication – Mobiles , Radio, TV, Internet, Vehicle control systems etc.. Missiles and bombs control system Navigation systems Power generation and distribution system Computers, control panels, PLC, SCADA Medical equipments MRI, ECG, ECO etc Home appliances Fridge, Fans, ACs, oven, etc Banking and finance, Food production, refrigeration and Emergency services..

Effects of EMP

Effects of EMP

EMP Types LEMP: Lightening Electromagnetic Pulse Natural Process NEMP: Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse After Shocks of Nuclear Blast NNEMP: Non Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse Man made E-Bomb

LEMP: Lightening EMP Lightening acts as EMP source by inducing high surge voltages , destroying electric/electronic circuits in the zone..

NEMP: Nuclear EMP EMP will be generated in nanoseconds following a nuclear blast. Nuclear weapons generate EMP as a secondary effect. Paralyzing electrical/electronic circuits

NNEMP: Non Nuclear EMP Commonly known as E-Bomb It is believed that USA, Russia, China and few other countries has these kind of bombs. Apparently no effects on living things.. Negligible collateral damage / damage to infrastructure.

NNEMP: Non Nuclear EMP ( E- Bomb) Main Parts: Power Supply and Capacitor Banks Flux compression generator FCG Pulse Shaping and distribution system

Working of E-Bomb

Flux Compression Generator (FCG) FCG Creates EMP Main Parts: Armature Stator Explosive material

Working of E-Bomb

Working of E-Bomb A switch connects the capacitors to the stator, sending an electrical current through the wires. This generates an intense magnetic field. A fuse mechanism ignites the explosive material. The explosion travels as a wave through the middle of the armature cylinder. As the explosion makes its way through the cylinder, the cylinder comes in contact with the stator winding. This creates a short circuit, cutting the stator off from its power supply. The moving short circuit compresses the magnetic field, generating an intense electromagnetic burst or EMP.

Defense against EMP Electromagnetically harden important assets Convert computer rooms in to Faraday cages Use optical fibers for data Isolate power feeds with transient arrestors Use non-electrical power feed schemes Use electromagnetic “air lock”

Faraday cage A  Faraday cage  or  Faraday shield  is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields.
