Employee relations is the management of the relationship between employer and employee.
It is a process that companies use to effectively manage all interactions with employees ultimately to achieve the
goals of the organization.
Refers to an organization‟s efforts to create and maintain a positive relationship with its employees.
Labour Laws
The employment relationship is the legal link between the employer and employees. It exists when a person
performs work or services under certain conditions in return for remuneration.
Labour laws determines the nature and extent of employer rights and obligations towards their workers.

The responsibility of HR include identifying the staff viewpoints about the company by
assigning them some activities that‟s is given below:
1)Employee Opinion Survey: Feedback from employees on workplace issues such as
performance, pay and overall working environment. It helps in creating action plan for
managers in modify working conditions to improve overall job satisfaction of an
employee.
2)Training Aids: The benefits of training are improved relationship between supervisors and
their employees as well as more effective workforce management skills. It also includes
one to one guidance.
3)Human Resource Information System: HRIS generate employee census reports and also
helps in analysing time tracking, compensation structure, recruitment and selection
processes. Its helps an organisation to manager human resource processes.

Industrial Relations
Industrial Relation is a process by which people interact at the place of work to establish terms and
condition of employment. The process of interaction about their problem not just the resulting
standards.
The term “Industrial Relations” denotes employer-employee relations.
It is also known as Labor management relations or labor relations.
Characteristics-
1)Without the existence of two parties this relationship cannot exist,
2)Industrial Relations are characterized by both conflict and co-operation.
3)The study of Industrial Relations includes: technology of the workplace, political environment at the
workplace, workers and employers and the impact of new wave of global markets, supply and
demand.
4)Industrial Relations also study the rules laws regulations, agreements related with both the parties.

Aspects of Industrial Relations
1)Development of Healthy Labor Management Relations:
Job security of the employees
Helps in increased workers participation in management
Give labor a defined role in the society
Helps in maintaining equality of status between two conflicting groups
Trade Union and employers maintain and improve labor- management relations and thereby
contribute to industrial peace.
2)Maintenance of Industrial Peace:
Laws, create harmonious labor management relations and also helps in increasing productivity.

Growth of the Country
If Industrial relation are good then it will deliver better results like lower industrial conflict
better perception of employee towards organization, higher production, etc. These all
together will help to grow the economy of the country.
1.Transformed Outlook: with the help of transformed outlook of both employer and
employee, national economy will also grow as transformed perception of both employer
and employee acts as a base of industrial peace.
2.Decrease in Poverty and Unemployment: with the help of quick industrialization,
unemployment and poverty can be diminished from the society.
3.Self-Sufficient in Defense Production: Industrial relation helps in gaining independence
in production of war weapons.
4.Fast growth of National Income: For the fast growth of national Income , industrial
relation is important.

Definition and Objectives of Trade Union
According to Lester, “A trade union is an association of employees designed, primarily to
maintain or improve the condition of employment of its members”.
According to Webbs ,”A trade union is a continuous association of wage earners for the
purpose of maintaining and improving the conditions of their working lives”

Various Functions of trade unions are categorized in the following groups:
1) Militant Function: „Better economic future and good working environment‟
To ensure increased wages and better workplace conditions
To safeguard workers against injustice.
2) Fraternal Function: ‘enhancing their efficiency and promote cooperation and enhance
cordial relations among industries’
Boosting self-confidence of workers
Appreciating discipline and sincerity of employees
Protecting female employee from discrimination
3) Political Functions: Donation collection and taking help from political parties during
strikes. The political functions involves:
Taking participation in political process- contribution in the formulation of the policies as
well as the implementation is the duty of trade unions.

4) Representative Function:
These can be categorized under the following heads:
Welfare Activities: various welfare measures taken up by many unions which
includes -
providing houses, mutual funds, cultural programs, banking and other
medical facilities. And also it includes training of women in various crafts and
skills which can help them in contributing to their family income.
There are certain unions which are quit active in the field of welfare measure such

Trade unions launch various education programs for employees Likewise – their rights and
responsibilities, the participation scheme for workers, and grievances redressal
mechanism in the organization.
Publications of News Letters and Magazine: Communicate the policies and view points on
various important issues to the member.
These tools also help them in communicating the personal events such as birth,
marriages, promotion and other achievements
Research: Information needs to be collected (day to day) and then analyzed for
negotiation process.
Union leader must know about the productivity of its members and the wage practices so
that they can put forward the demand of wage increase of workers.
