INTRODUCTION Essential care of normal healthy neonates can be best provided by the mothers under supervision of nursing personnel. About 80% of the newborn babies should be kept with their mothers rather than in a separate nursery.
HEALTHY NEWBORN A healthy infant born at 38 – 42 week should have average with birth weight, cries immediately following birth, rhythmic respiration & quickly adapts to the changed environment.

CARE OF BABY AFTER BIRTH Receive the baby Immediate after birth, note the time of birth and sex of the baby Newborn should be placed on mother’s abdomen in a prone position. The face should be turned to one side. Immediate dry the baby with a pre warmed towel and wipe off the baby. The vernix caseosa should not be wiped. After drying the baby, discard the wet towel and wrap the baby in another clean and warm towel.
CONT…. Clumping and cutting the umbilical cord – Check the cord pulsations When the cord pulsation stops, it should be clamped at two places by two clamp First clamp should be put at above 2.5 cm away from the umbilicus whereas other is placed 5 cm away from the first Now cut the cord in between two clamps. Apply two separate disposable sterile cord ligatures tightly on the cord, one on neonatal side and other on placental side. Placenta should be direct discard to the yellow bin. Umbilical cord should be clamped and cut between 2-3 minute.
CONT… Baby place on radiate warmer Clear the airway of the neonate – In the newborn’s airway mucus, amniotic fluid, meconium etc. First suction from the mouth than after nose Both the eyelids should be wiped using sterile gauze piece. Wiping should be done from inner to outer canthus. Separate cotton swabs should be used to clean each eye.
CONT… Quick inspection of the neonatal should be done for detecting any gross congenital abnormality. APGAR SCORING Place identification tag on neonate’s wrist or leg. Now the neonates should be placed with mother. Encouraging the mother for initiating breast feeding.
