ENDEMIC SPECIES BY DIANA JOHN 8B

What are endemic species?

Endemic Species Endemic species are those species of plants and animals which are found exclusively in a particular area . These species are mostly restricted to a particular habitat where they live and are found nowhere else. The particular area/location where an endemic species is found is called a ’national endemic’ or an ’endemic site’

EXAMPLES FLORA Lemurs of Madagascar, Tortoises of Galapangos Wild dogs, The Indian wolf, bison, Indian giant squirrels, and flying squirrels of the panchmarhi bioshere FAUNA Sal, Wild Mango tree, silver fern of the Panchmarhi Bioshere Waxflower,Nevada primrose

Why are species endemic?

Causes of Endemism

What is the major threat associated with endemic species?

Major threat associated with endemic species The main threat associated with endemic species is that they are more vulnerable to extinction. Since they are rare and found only in a particular region or habitat, the destruction of their habitats due to human activities or causes such as natural disasters (earthquake, tsunami) or climate change would reduce their population drastically and can ultimately result in extinction
