LITERARY TEXT

A literary text is a piece of writing, such as a book or poem, that has the purpose of telling a story or entertaining, as in a fictional novel. Its primary function as a text is usually aesthetic, but it may also contain political messages or beliefs.

CHARACTERISTIC OF LITERARY TEXT The literary text is ambiguous, so it is common for it to have different interpretations. It is polysemic, and acquires new meanings with each reading. It does not have a pragmatic purpose or a specific objective, even though whoever produces it may have a specific intention. It is not directed at a specific audience. It makes use of rhetorical and stylistic resources to fulfill its aesthetic function: onomatopoeia, hyperbole, metaphors, similes, alliteration, etc

PROSE Is ordinary language that follows regular grammatical conventions and does not contain a formal metrical structure. This definition of prose is an example of prose writing, as is most human conversation, textbooks, lectures, novels, short stories, fairy tales, newspaper articles, and essays. Example: “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”

BIOGRAPHIES Biography is a story written about someone’s life. A written account of one person’s life authored by another person. Example: A book about the story of President Obama’s life.

NOVELLAS A narrative work of fiction that is shorter than a novel, but longer than a short story.” A novella is a narrative work of fiction that is intermediate in length and complexity between a short story and a novel. A work of fiction between 20,000 and 49,999 words is considered a novella. EXAMPLE “Animal Farm” by George Orwell (1945) “Bartleby the Scrivener” by Herman Melville (1853) “Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Three Stories” by Truman Capote (1958)

MEMOIRS A historical account or biography written from personal knowledge or special sources. A book or other piece of writing based on the writer’s personal knowledge of famous people, places, or events. Memoir authors choose a pivotal moment in their lives and try to recreate the event through storytelling. Henry David Thoreau’s Walden . Elie Wiesel’s Night . Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love .

Novel is an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and deals especially with human experience through a usually connected sequence of event. Short Story is a work of fictional narrative prose with a few characters , limited setting , and a single major event.

Drama is the portrayal of fictional or non-fictional events through the performance of written dialogue either prose or poetry. It also a form of literature that is written to be performed for an audience , whether on stage or in front of cameras. Comics is a medium used to express ideas with images , often combined with text or other visual information. Memoirs is a form of creative non-fiction in which an author recounts experiences from his or her life.

NON- LITERARY TEXT

A Non-literary text is one that has a referential or informative function, a specific purpose, has an objective character and makes use of denotative language.

Non-literary texts are texts such as advertisements, brochures, and newspaper or magazine articles and editorials. They're typically short and to the point, and they don't use a lot of figurative language like imagery and metaphor.
