Review What is exemplification? What is classification? How do we write exemplification and classification paragraphs?

Exemplification is a common and effective way to show or explain an idea or point (e.g., observation, opinion, belief). In this pattern of development, the writer explains the main idea by giving an extended example or a series of detailed examples.

Colonial Mentality

State first the topic sentence. Example: It has been over a hundred years since the Philippines was freed from colonization by other countries, but Filipinos still suffer from colonial mentality. It is something which many can’t get rid of, and it is and has been destroying lives since then. Guidelines in Exemplification Writing

Support the topic sentence with examples. Example: For instance, colonial mentality makes the Filipino people sick physically, emotionally, and psychologically. For one, because of the obsession to have fair skin, many want to undergo skin bleaching, which can become life-threatening if not done properly. In fact, many have been reported to have experienced skin burns because of bleaching.

Put a conclusion. Example: You see, the colonial mentality is one practice that Filipino people should let go of. It will be a long and tedious process, but surely, it will be worth the effort.

Use transition words. Example: For instance , colonial mentality makes the Filipino people sick physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Another consequence of colonial mentality is bullying. Lastly , the colonial mentality kills the Filipino people’s patriotism.

Use an outline or graphic organizer. Title Colonial Mentality Topic Sentence Colonial mentality is destroying the lives of the Filipino people. Supporting detail no. 1 Many are harmed because of skin bleaching. Supporting detail no. 2 Many are bullied because of the obsession for fair skin. Classification refers to the sorting or arrangement of subjects (e.g., persons, places, things, ideas) into groups or categories according to their common or shared characteristics.

In writing a classification paragraph, the same guidelines of writing exemplification paragraphs apply. Just remember that in a classification paragraph, you provide the categories and expand on each of them; while in exemplification paragraph, you provide examples to expand on the topic sentence.

Divide into four groups. Each group should c hoose a societal issue that you are interested in. Have a discussion first within the group. Take turns in giving your statements about the issue. List down all the statements given. Then, choose the statements that are sound based on the issue. Using the chosen statements, make an exemplification or classification paragraph about the issue.

Make sure to follow the guidelines in writing exemplification and classification paragraphs. Have one member of your group present your work in class.

After the activity, answer the following questions. How did you decide on the topic for your paragraph writing? How did you decide on what pattern of writing to make?
