English Comprehension And Composition Significance Of English Comprehension
Definition: The ability to understand information presented in the written form is called comprehension. Comprehension is basically the interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, readers will be able to: 1- Decoding 2- Make connections between what is read and what the reader already knows. 3- Think deeply about the topic. Language Skills: Comprehension is a creative, multifaceted process dependent upon four language skills: 1- Phonology ( How language organize its sounds) 2- Syntax ( Combination of words to form phrases and sentences) 3- Semantics ( Study of meaning/ refrence / truth)
4- Pragmatics (Utilization of human language in social interactions) Features of comprehension: 1- Ability to identify main idea and key details. 2- Ability to sequence a passage into an ordinal series. 3- Ability to answer direct recall questions. 4- Ability to make inferences or predictions. 5- Identify unfamiliar vocabulary. Level Of Comprehension: The level of comprehension is a devise that aids in literature analysis. One way to conduct this literature analysis is using a system called level of comprehension. There are six levels of comprehension: 1- Literal Comprehension 2- Inferential Comprehension 3- Appreciative Comprehension
4- Evaluative Comprehension 5- Essential Comprehension 1- Literal Comprehension: It occurs at the surface level when the readers or the viewers acknowledge what they can see and hear. It is the simplest form of the comprehension. 2- Inferential Comprehension: It requires its readers to draw on their prior knowledge of atopic and identify relevant text clues to make an inference. 3- Appreciative Comprehension: You are able to comprehend author’s point of view, purpose, tone etc based on clues in the text. 4- Evaluative Comprehension:
You understand ideas or information well enough to analyze, judge or critique information and ideas. 5- Essential Comprehension: At this level, decisions are made whether the text is accurate and reliable or discern if a statement is a fact or an opinion. Significance: Comprehension strategies are used to increase understanding of the text to help readers become active by engaging with the text. Advantages: 1- Comprehension improves our reading skills and develops understanding of the text. 2- Comprehension develops our habit of effective reading as it compels us to study with care and concentration. 3- Comprehension develops our writing skills because it gives us a useful practice in writing.
Disadvantages: 1- Confusion about the meanings of the words and sentences. 2- Inability to connect ideas in a passage. 3- Omission of or glossing over details. 4- Difficulty in distinguishing significant information from minor details. 5- Lack of concentration during reading. Conclusion: Comprehension is basically associated with understanding of the text. Reader can only have a grip on it if he/ she concentrates on the text written and have a good collection of vocabulary.
