Creative writing NOUN writing, typically fiction or poetry, which displays imagination or invention

Lesson objective: Students will be able to recognise the elements needed to produce a piece of creative writing

Starter: Fill in the blanks with some interesting words and phrases. 

Time Machine. If you had a time machine, where would you go and what would you do?  If I had a time machine, I would................. Use a dictionary or thesaurus to help you find some words to include in your piece if needed,  

Plenary: To work towards securing the skill I can choose appropriate titles that reflect the content of my written work, choose an appropriate title for the story you have just written about the time machine.

Lesson objective: To demonstrate the correct use of capital letters and full stops.

Capital letters When should we use capital letters?  Write a list in your notebook of when we should use capital letters to refer to in the future if you need to.  

Plenary: Write a short plan for a creative writing piece about a day at the beach.  Or  Write a mind map including words and or phrases that you will include in your written piece about a day at the beach. 

Lesson objective:  To create a description using the senses.

Starter: You have 5 minutes to write down as many words as you can under each sense that describes the room that you're in.  SIGHT   TASTE   TOUCH   HEAR   SMELL   

Using the sensory scene setting, write an appropriate scene of your choice incorporating the senses. Write at least half a page.

Plenary:  Self-assess your work.  What do you think you have done well this lesson?  For example, you could have found many words that describe the senses.  Or you could have used full stops correctly.  How can you move forward with your learning? For example, to move your learning forward you could increase your knowledge when it comes to the senses.  Or you could know when to use a full stop or s capital letter.

Starter : Roll and write a short story  Roll a setting  Number  1 = where: an Ocean          When: wintertime 2= where: the shopping centre           When: midnight  3=where: the train station       When: during the war  4=where: a cave      When: The summer 5=where: a sailboat       When: noon  6=where: the moon  When: today  Roll a character 1= an angry surfer 2= a talking gorilla 3= a boat captain 4= Friendly aliens 5= a ticket inspector 6= your friends Roll a plot  1= looking for the Bermuda triangle  2= running from bigfoot into the mountains 3= going on an adventure with your friends 4= going to see what is on the moon 5= going to a concert  6= you find a mysterious diary 

Task: A day at the Beach. Imagine this scene. You are lying on the beach on a hot summer's day when suddenly ….............. Continue the story, you should write AT LEAST half a page. Remember to use capital letters and full stops correctly and write in paragraphs. 

Challenge  Write a sentence that includes alliteration to describe the beach  Write a sentence that includes a metaphor and or simile to describe the beach.

Have you checked over your work? Checklist  Have you used capital letters correctly?  Have you used full stops correctly?  Have you written in paragraphs?  Have you checked over your spellings or used a dictionary to aid your spelling?  

Plenary: discuss with a classmate and  write five (5) of your own example.  

Lesson objective: To be able to recognize exclamation marks. To use exclamation marks to improve sentences.

Exclamation marks can express excitement. How many words can you think of to express how the children feel about their new puppy? Write the words in the clouds. Draw more clouds if you need to and don’t forget the exclamation marks . After you have written these words include them in a sentence.

Imagine this scene: Continue the story, you should write ATLEAST half a page. Remember to use capital letters and full stops correctly and write in paragraphs . 

Challenge  Rewrite the passage in your own words and make it more appealing to the reader if you can.  Try to include alliteration, amazing adjectives and similes or metaphors

Punctuate the paragraph 

Plenary: 

Write as many descriptive words around this picture as you can. 

Pick a title based on the picture and explain why you have chosen that title. 

Challenge  Now you have chosen a title that you think suits the picture best, write a short creative piece .
