Preparation

Directions: Read the following texts. Tell what is the autor’s purpose.

Be a role model. Show others the importance of cleaning hands, covering coughs and sneezes with a bent elbow, maintaining a distance of at least 1 meter. “Don’t just Say it, Do it!” TEXT #1

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol is a one of a kind geological formation of grass-covered hills that turn brown during the dry season. TEXT #2

It was a sunny day. The sun was shining through the trees. Peter and James decided to go fishing. They had a great time on their early morning fishing trips. TEXT #3

1.What are the three main reasons of an author in writing a text? -To persuade -To inform -To entertain

2. In the first text, what does the author persuade us to do? -Don’t just say it, Do it!

3. In the second text, what is the author trying to inform us about? -Chocolate Hills is a geological formation wherein its grass turn brown during dry season.

4. In the third text, how does the author entertain us? The great fishing trips of James and Peter.

LESSON PROPER

To determine the author’s purpose in writing, remember the acronym PIE . P ersuade, I nform, E ntertain.

There are 3 main purposes of writing: 1. Persuade - Write text to influence/convince the reader to do or believe something.

2. Inform - Write text to provide information or to teach something.

3. Entertain - Write text to hold reader’s attention through enjoyment or to give reader enjoyment.

APPLICATION

Directions: Read the descriptions of each item and determine the author’s main purpose ( to entertain , persuade , or inform ). Use another sheet of paper.

1. A one-page printout showing how to put together a coffee table that came in a box Author’s Purpose: to inform

2. A picture book about a dog that gets lost on a family vacation and must find his way home Author’s Purpose: to entertain

3. A timeline showing important events in the Country. Author’s Purpose: to inform

4. An internet advertisement banner telling you to click it for a free iPhone. Author’s Purpose: to persuade
