LESSON PROPER

What is the author’s purpose? An author is a person who wrote something. An purpose is a reason for doing something.

How to find the author’s purpose? Ask yourself, “Is it a story, a poem or a play? It was probably written to entertain.

How to find the author’s purpose? Ask yourself, “Is the text teaching me about something or showing me how to do something? It was probably written to inform.

How to find the author’s purpose? Ask yourself, “Is this text trying to get me to do something?. It was probably written to persuade.

There are 3 main purposes of writing: 1. Persuade - Write text to influence/convince the reader to do or believe something.

2. Inform - Write text to provide information or to teach something.

3. Entertain - Write text to hold reader’s attention through enjoyment or to give reader enjoyment.

APPLICATION

Directions: Read the descriptions of each item and determine the author’s main purpose ( to entertain , persuade , or inform ). Use another sheet of paper.

1. A one-page printout showing how to put together a coffee table that came in a box Author’s Purpose: to inform

2. A picture book about a dog that gets lost on a family vacation and must find his way home Author’s Purpose: to entertain

3. A timeline showing important events in the Country. Author’s Purpose: to inform

4. An internet advertisement banner telling you to click it for a free iPhone. Author’s Purpose: to persuade

EVALUATION

Directions: Read the descriptions of each item and distinguish the text-types according to purpose (to entertain, persuade, or inform). Write P -if its purpose is to persuade, I - if it is to inform and E -if it is to Entertain.
