III. GOSPEL READING: (Mt.13:54-58) Leader: A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. And coming to his hometown, Jesus taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said,”Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?
Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not the mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them,” A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” And He did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.( Pause – 5 seconds) Leader: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to You, O Lord Jesus Christ.
IV.REFLECTION: (C/O Facilitator ) During the time of Jesus, the son inherited not just his father’s name but also his father’s occupation. Jesus was known as Yehohua Bar –Joseph (Jesus, son of Joseph ) but also as the carpenter’s son.
In fact, in his native town of Nazareth, he was laso referred to as “the carpenter” (Mk.6:3). Given his familiarity and humble background, Jesus’ townsmen did not expect much from the native son.
Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Jesus returns to his hometown Nazareth and preaches at the synagogue. Many who hear Jesus are amazed but there is astonishment not of admiration but of offense. They question his family background.
They doubt the teaching. They reflect in attitude of discrimination, indifference, and misconception. The former townmates of Jesus question his capacity and family background because they ar lacking in faith.
Because of their lack of faith, Jesus does not work many miracles there – unlike in other Galilean towns. These days, we hear of people being honored for being successful and for putting the name of their town in the map.
They are Manny Pacquiao’s boxing talent in GenSan , Nora Aunor’s voice for Iriga , Boy Abunda’s gab for Borongan , and many more. It is not easy to see Jesus in everyone, especially in those who often annoy or disturb us.
But it is a blessing to be able to see Jesus in a person. In doing so, we are also recognizing the Lord’s presence in ourselves. Let us check if that presence has changed us.
SMALL GROUP SHARING: (4 -5 students in 1 group) 20 min. GUIDE QUESTIONS: 1. We all need to belong in our relationship with others. What are your personal experiences with others which make you feel, “ I am accepted or recognized through my talents and skills that I share to everyone?
