INTRODUCTION Over the last few decades, the exploitation of our planet and degradation of our environment have gone up at an alarming rate . As our action have been not in favour of protecting this planet , we have seen natural disasters striking us more obtain in the form of flash floods, tsunamis and cyclones. This presentation help us to introduce with current environmental issues with their solutions in INDIA. India’s population growth adds pressure to create environmental issues also to increase use of natural resources How can we achieve sustainable development in india with present scenario and taking consideration of global protocols. 3
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN INDIA Nearly 30% of India’s gross agricultural output is loss every year due to soil degradation, poor land management and counter productive irrigation . Hundred of miles of coral and other sea life are slowly being destroyed due to offshore drilling . On I ndia’s 7515km of coastline, overfishing remains a huge problem due to lack of legislation enforcement. The major sources of pollution in I ndia include the rapid burning of fuel wood and biomass such as dried waste from livestock as the primary source of energy , lack of organized garbage and waste removal services and lack of sewage treatment operations( for ex. Rapid urbanization has caused a build up of heavy metals in the soil of the city Ghaziabad , and these metals are being ingested through contaminated vegetables.) The rapidly dropping water table, mass deforestation, land degradation or river contamination . Air pollution in I ndia increases due to industrialization and use of old public transport system. There is a long history of study and debate about the interactions between population growth and the environment, like the one Malthus propounded long ago . Environmental degradation causes adverse effect on public health , loss of bio-diversity, loss of resilience ecosystems , livelihood security for the poor . 4
According to environment assessment studies of world bank experts, between 1995 through 2010. INDIA has made one of the fastest progress in the world, in addressing its environmental issues and improving its environmental quality and achieve sustainability development in INDIA . 5
WATER POLLUTION 6
WATER POLLUTION India has just inaugurated India water week 2017. The issue of water is becoming still more critical in view of climate change and related environmental concerns . 80% of water in india is used by agriculture and only 15% by industry In urban india , 40 billion litres of waste water is produced everyday . 85% of rural drinking water and 55% of urban water comes from underground sources . According to a WHO study our I ndia’s 3,119 towns and cities, just 209 have partial sewage treatment facilities, and only 8 have full waste water treatment facilities . Investment is needed to for 29000 million litre per day of sewage india generates , and a treatment capacity of 6000 million litre per day. 7
8 WATER POLLUTION PREVENTION
AIR POLLUTION We can withstand unclean water even for a while but it really impossible so in case of air. Without a doubt the main contributor of air pollution in India is the transport system, traffic congestion, biogas fuel wood burning , In vehicles dirty diesel out millions of tonnes more sulphur 85% of rural households in india used wood as the number one fuel. The asthama rate for children in some of the larger cities is now at 50% and rising fast . Roughly 2.2 million people is dying as a direct result of air pollution. Approximately 500 million tons of crop residue is burn in open, releasing smoke ,soot, NOx , SOx ,PAHs and particulate matter into the air . Air pollution is also the main cause of the ASIAN BROWN CLOUD , which is causing the MANSOON to be delayed. 9
On per capita basis , india is a small emitter of carbon dioxide greenhouse. In 2009, IEA estimates that india emitted about 1.4 tonnes of gad per person , comparison to the united state 17 tons per person ,and a world average of 5.3 tons per person. However , india was the third largest emitter of total carbon dioxide in 2009 at 1.65 GB per year , after china (6.9 GT per year ). And united state (5.2 GT per litre) In 2012 environmental performance index rank india as having the poorest relative air quality out of 132 countries . 10
DEFORESTATION DEFORESTATION is the huge problem and will just continue to get worse as the trend goes World annual deforestation is estimated as 13.7 million hectors a year, where India rank 10 th . It is mainly caused by Environmental Degradation by stakeholders such a farmers, ranches, loggers and plantation corporations Bird like sparrow, pigeons and crow are becoming rarer Due to deforestation India is facing water problems in urban cities and villages. 11
NOISE POLLUTION Noise pollution or noise disturbance is the disturbing or excessive noise that may harm the activity or balance of human and animal life Noise –wise I ndia can be turned as the most polluted country in the world . High noise levels can be contribute to cardiovascular effects in humans and increased incidence of coronery artery disease. Two types of noise standards are prescribed ;ambient air quality standard in respect of noise and emission limits for designated type of machinery , appliances and fire crackers . 12
