LECTURE OUTLINE The concept of “waste/garbage” Types of waste Methods of utilization and their efficiency Decomposition of waste Different countries management waste strategies Waste and environment issues
What is WASTE? Waste is unwanted materials and objects that people have thrown away. Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it is worthless, defective and of no use. It can be solid, liquid, or gas.
TYPES OF SOLID WASTE a) Recyclable (reusable) b) Biodegradable (decomposable)
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE Biodegradable (decomposable) - food, green waste, turf grass, paper, tree's branch, boles, agricultural save etc.
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE
LIQUID WASTE Liquid waste is a liquid form of general waste. They are formed of industrial, fertilizer and pesticide solutions from agricultural fields, urban runoff etc.
LIQUID WASTE
GAS WASTE The gaseous wastes include carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), oxides of nitrogen (NO x ), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of sulphur ( SO x ) etc. These gaseous wastes can cause serious environmental hazards.
GAS WASTE
5 MAIN TYPES OF WASTE ORIGIN
URBAN (DOMESTIC) WASTE Urban (domestic) - is a waste type consisting of everyday items that are discarded by the public
URBAN (DOMESTIC) WASTE
INDUSTRIAL WASTE Industrial - is the waste produced by industrial activity which includes any material that is represent useless during a manufacturing process that are mainly from factories, industries, mills, and mining operations
INDUSTRIAL WASTE
AGRICULTURAL WASTE Agricultural - which includes both natural (organic) and non-natural wastes, is a general term used to describe waste produced on a farm through various farming activities
AGRICULTURAL WASTE
MEDICINAL WASTE Medical - is defined as- potentially infectious waste materials generated at health care facilities, such as hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, dental practices, blood banks, and veterinary hospitals/clinics, as well as medical research facilities and laboratories.
MEDICINAL WASTE
HAZARDOUS WASTE Hazardous - is waste that poses substantial or potential threats to public health or the environment.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
METHODS OF UTILIZATION Landfill Incinerating (burning) Recycling (sorting) Composting
LANDFILL Landfill a place to dispose of refuse and other way material by burying it and covering it over with soil, especially as a method of filling in or extending usable land.
INCINIRATE (BURNING) Incinerate (burning) – is destroy waste material by burning.
RECYCLING (SORTING) Recycling – is converting waste into reusable material.
COMPOSTING Composting – is making vegetable matters or manure into compost.
DECOMPOSITION OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF WASTE
WASTE MANAGEMENT IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES
WASTE IS A SCIENCE
WASTE AND ENVIRONMENT
8 million pieces of plastic pollution make their way into the ocean every day. (OSPAR, 2009) 12 million tons of plastic is dumped into the ocean every year ( Eunomia, 2016 )
80% of all studied marine debris is plastic. (IUCN, 2020) 5.25 trillion macro and microplastics may now be floating in the open ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tonnes . (Eriksen, 2014)
100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution every year. (UK Government, 2018)
1 in 3 fish caught for human consumption now contains plastic.
2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide is generated by producing 1 tonne of plastic
